Kaitlin StockKaitlin Stock
My name is Kaitlin Stock and I did my service learning project at Building Hope Community Life Center. It took me several weeks to pick an agency, but I can honestly say that I picked the right one! Building Hope is a faith-based after school program designed to help young children and families become successful. It does this by developing the spiritual and educational skills that help them overcome economic and cultural hardships and hindrances in life.
My job at Building Hope was to be a mentor and a tutor to the kids. I would usually arrive at the center around 2:45 in the afternoon and would stay until 5pm. The center is very flexible with your hours because you can come and go whenever you want. If you just want to come for an hour you can. The first part of my day was spent talking with the children as they ate snack. After snack we moved on to devotion. One of the teachers at Building Hope would have a half hour lesson planned for the kids. A lot of them were really interesting and very interactive. After an inspirational devotion I moved on to assisting the children with homework. I normally spent at least twenty minutes reading with one student and then I would work on math, social studies, and spelling with groups of students. Homework lasted for a good hour before the children were allowed to participate in playtime. Playtime consisted of either drawing pictures, jumping rope, playing cards, or just watching the kids as they played games.
Building Hope Community Life Center was a perfect place for me to do my service learning. I learned a lot of lessons that will help me as I pursue a career in Nursing. I learned a lot about patience and I learned a lot about not judging people from first impressions. Many of these children come from families where the parents work long hours and don’t have a lot of time to assist their children in homework. I also learned that people have different ideas on what items are most valuable to them. Some people choose to spend money on clothes and cars where others spend it on their house and other unseen factors. All of the lessons I learned from the center are very valuable and I know they will help me in my future career.
