Kathryn EllisKathryn Ellis
Hi, my name is Kathryn Ellis and I volunteered at Building Hope Community Life Center for my service learning project.  Building Hope is a faith based after school program designed to help young children and families become successful by developing the spiritual and moral infrastructure as well as the necessary educational skills to overcome economic and cultural hardships and hindrances of life.

As a volunteer, it was my responsibility to be a tutor and work one on one with these kids.  I helped elementary school children with reading, science, math, and spelling homework.  I provided the individual attention and moral support these kids need.  After devotion and homework was completed, it was play time.   I colored pictures, jumped rope, and played basketball outside.

Volunteering at Building Hope helped me to better understand how unique each individual child can be.  Kids are just as intricate and complicated as adults are, and should be treated with as much respect as an adult.  I also learned how to let down my sense of being an authority figure, and allow myself to goof around with these kids during play time.

Completing my service learning project at Building Hope was a rewarding experience for me.  I know that both the kids and I have learned something valuable throughout my time spent there.
