Lindsey SaulsLindsey Sauls
My name is Lindsey Sauls, and during my Health 1050 course I was required to 25 hours of service learning.  Of course at first I was like, “Great, just add one more thing to my ‘to do’ list!”  But it ended up being a great experience, which I am glad I had the opportunity to do.

I chose Operation Sunshine as my agency which is an after school program for at risk females ages 6-13.  Their mission was to provide a safe, motivating, and structured environment where these girls could grow and develop academically, mentally, emotionally as well as socially.  I absolutely loved it!!  We did homework which was a daily surprise if I even remembered how to do it, jumping rope (an everyday serious activity), and various activities inside and outside.

Not only do these little girls grow and develop, but so do the volunteers.  The girls changed my attitude and outlook on life.  I had the most fun playing and getting to know these girls that I forgot all my problems and focused on helping them, but in the end they helped me.  I grew into a rounder person; I experienced what it was like to be a carefree kid again and it was amazing.  I learned that sometimes a person has to look outside their own bubble, and when you do you learn so much about yourself.
