I volunteered at the hospital for my service learning project not only because I had to, but because I would eventually like to work at one. I worked in the cardiac tower for the first half of my hours and did transport for the second half. On the cardiac tower I enforced the visiting hours for the ICU and the other cardiac patients. The rules were very strict, but I understood that the cardiac patients did not need any more stress. Working in transport I transported patients, medicine, and lab materials. While working for transport I got acquainted with all of the areas of the hospital and what all the areas did. I think volunteering at the hospital is a good idea for anyone who wants to go into the healthcare field, or if they are not sure what they want to do. I learned so much about how the hospital operates, and will continue to volunteer at the hospital throughout my time here in Greenville.

By volunteering at the hospital many of the concepts I have learned in health class were enforced at the hospital. While working in the cardiac tower, I got to see many of the patients. I saw that there is no stereotype for cardiac patients; there were many patients in the hospital that looked as if they were healthy. I also saw that an entire wing of the hospital had to be devoted to cardiac patients. This showed proves that there must be many patients that have cardiac problems which we learned in class. While working in patient transport I learned about emotional health. It is sometimes hard for people to depend on others for help because they are not emotionally stable. I have transported patients that say they do not need a wheelchair or any help, but when I went to get them from admissions they limped up to me and walked as if they were in pain. I learned that not everyone is secure with their emotional health, but maybe working at the hospital is just what they need.
