At Pitt Memorial Hospital, the Volunteer Services Department works as hard as they can in order to put you into a position that they feel fits your interests and skills.  I was placed into the Radiology Transport Department because I wanted to know more about the hospital in general.  In radiology transport, you get a chance to learn your way around the hospital quickly and you are able to see all different areas of the hospital.  This job is ideal for someone who is planning on becoming a nurse because it can help you decide what aspect of nursing you would like to pursue.

The role of the people in radiology transport is to get patients back and forth to their rooms and the CT (computed tomography) scan/X-Ray rooms.  Their goal is to do it as quickly as possible, while keeping the patient as comfortable and as calm as possible.  There is so much that you can learn just by being in this department for one day.  I have learned so much throughout my experience at the hospital.  Some of these things include the importance of preventing the spread of infectious diseases and learning the meaning of many medical terms.  Most importantly I learned that volunteers are essential in helping the hospital to run smoothly.  We are the people who pick up the slack that everyone else cannot carry because of their already burdensome loads.  Overall, volunteering at the hospital has been extremely rewarding and I have truly enjoyed it.
