Admission to Candidacy Phase
  1. be admitted to East Carolina University,
  2. enter the program with a 2.0 GPA from your most recent educational institution (based on a 4.0 scale),
  3. have on file, by July 1st preceding the semester in which you wish to enter, a completed application which includes:
    a) two letters of recommendation,
    b) Official transcripts from your most recent institution sent directly to Athletic Training Program, 245 Ward Sports Medicine Bldg, East Carolina University, Greenville NC 27858-4353.
    c) a 250 word essay describing why you want to be an athletic trainer;
    d) a signed copy of the Technical Standards for admission to the Athletic Training Program.
  4. attend a mandatory organizational meeting at the beginning of the fall semester (typically the evening before classes begin).

All students entering the program must begin during the Fall semester. No mid-year students will be accepted. Valuable practical experience can be gained as an athletic training student shadowing in your first year. First year athletic training students (Candidates) will use the two semesters of that year for observation only. The required 200 hours gained during that year will not count toward the 800 needed for graduation, but will be used as one the criteria for determining official acceptance into the major. Athletic training students undergoing the candidacy period will observe athletic training majors by rotating through the sports at East Carolina University as assigned (typically two-week blocks). The candidates will be expected to be at the practices for their assigned sport during their rotation (therefore it is wise to sign up for primarily morning classes). At the end of the candidacy year (typically May), it will be determined whether or not one is accepted into the curriculum, based on the numbers of slots available.
