 Allison Castellana
Hello! My name is Allison Castellana and for my Health 1050 service learning requirement I chose to volunteer at Operation Sunshine. After seeing their description in the Volunteer Center catalogue I was very excited… I felt that I was very qualified for the position and I had experience in all the services they offered. After I began volunteering there, I was even more excited, things were better than I had imagined. Operation Sunshine is a non-profit, after-school program for at-risk girls ages six through thirteen. As a division of the United Way, the employees strive to make these girls into model citizens, and young ladies. Leading by example, the women offer advice, constructive criticism, and reinforcement as they work hard to steer these girls into the right direction. During the time at Operation Sunshine the girls receive homework help, play together inside and outside, eat snacks, and occasionally do a craft. When you walk into the facility you will always be greeted with hugs, smiling faces, and energetic young bodies. While I was a volunteer at Operation Sunshine, I was pleasantly surprised to see how mannerly the girls tended to be as Mrs. Ormond- Davis, the director, accepted nothing less. The girls love to receive your help with homework, and always acquire your company at other times. Whether you want to spend an hour there, or all three, you will always be entertained. I encourage all females to spend time at Operation Sunshine and get to know the girls, you will develop a bond with them, and want to continue going so that you too, can help them succeed.
