Community Health

Community health educators work closely with people in communities as they strive for improved health. Community health educators develop skills in community organization, needs assessment, and educational strategies for individuals and organizations. They plan, implement, and evaluate programs and services in a community health setting. Community health educators also help communities to draw on their problem-solving abilities, identify needs, and mobilize resources.

Admission Requirements

Students entering the community health option must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and thereafter must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the required cognates and pass all health education core courses with a minimum grade of C. A student earning a D in any of these courses must petition the Department of Health Education for probationary continuation. No student on probation may enroll for HLTH 4992, Community Internship.

A minimum of 30 semester hours at East Carolina University in regular classroom instruction.
A minimum of one-half of the semester hours required for the degree from a senior institution.
A minimum of one-half of the semester hours in the major at ECU.
A minimum of 12 semester hours of writing-intensive courses (English 1100 and 1200, at least 3 semester housed in major, and 3 hours of student's choice).
The minimum degree requirement is 126 semester hours of credit.
