Ingrid DukeIngrid Duke
Hi!  My name is Ingrid Duke and I volunteered with Growing Up FIT! as a freshman health student at ECU.  Growing Up FIT! was my choice.  Growing Up FIT! works through collaborative community partnerships to improve the growth and health of elementary school students.  The focus is to improve opportunities for physical activity, physical education, healthy eating and nutrition education.  Growing Up FIT! involves individual choice, as well as community action, and policy and environmental change.

My main goal in volunteering with Growing Up FIT! was to help develop a program, under the guidance of faculty and peers, that children could use to be more aware of their health and eating habits.  I accomplished this goal by creating a cafeteria game for preschoolers to enjoy, and in doing so learned a great deal about not only the behaviors of preschool age children, but of all elementary school kids.  I was put to the test each day when I volunteered at schools, helping with after school programs and mentor sessions.  However, throughout my experience I gained critical knowledge of both students and the classroom that I will use to one day instill nutritional values in my very own classroom, as I aspire to become a teacher myself.

As a result of volunteering with Growing UP FIT!, I have become more consciously aware of the false consciousness that many young children feel in reference to diet.  Growing Up FIT! works through elementary schools to help instill nutritionally healthy dietary habits into children’s daily lives, in hope that one day nutrition will be of their main concern.
