Growing up Fit is an after school organization that helps elementary school level children not only gain the ability to handle themselves properly in social situations but also build their studying and homework skills for when it is needed in the ordinary school environment. As a volunteer, I worked with the students on their reading and math, taught them about nutrition, and played games with them in the gym to help them exercise. I had them stretch each day before going on to the game, and created a fun activity for them to play that was both enjoyable as well as educational. I learned to deal with children that refused to listen to authority, fought with one another, and cried until they felt they got their way. I worked for nearly two months with the program and found it to be well worth my effort and certainly for the kids, well worth their time.

Through my work I like to believe that I have positively affected these children and have given them a solid basis for continuing with their lives not only in the next few years but the next few decades as well. My goal in all of this was to teach these children not to worry about small things. School teaches them adequately about math and verbal skills, so I wanted to educate them on a new way of dealing with situations. My goal was simply to affect the lives of these children so that they are ready for what they’ll see in the future through the games I created for them to do in the gym. Growing up Fit gave me a lot of leeway to do this and was extremely helpful in doing so. I would recommend this organization to anyone who is willing and wanting to help our future…the children.
