Substance Abuse Prevention Programs at School

Edgecombe County, Pattillo Elementary School Disaster Relief/Resource Renewal Project, 2000-2001
Edgecombe County, Pattillo Elementary School Disaster Relief/Resource Renewal Project. Pattillo A+ Elementary School was totally lost due to the floodwaters of Hurricane Floyd with approximately 50% of the students losing their homes. Assessments of fourth-grader students revealed that a significant number reported symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. The purpose of this project is to replace educational materials that will help the children in this school. Interactive materials are available for teachers to integrate into the curriculum throughout the year to build resiliency/protective factors and to teach positive coping skills to prevent the onset of ATOD use or other unhealthy behaviors. Pitt County, Elementary Prevention and Parent Support Program, 2001-2002
Pitt County, Elementary Prevention and Parent Support Program, a joint effort between Pitt County Mental Health and the Pitt County School System to increase awareness of substance abuse prevention and resistance among elementary youth. The program assists teachers in recognizing potential problems and addressing them in a manner that may offset future substance abuse or other problem behaviors. Education and support groups will be conducted to inform parents on methods of reducing risk factors, building protective factors and addressing the issues surrounding substance abuse in young children. Classroom prevention training for elementary aged children and support groups for parents will be a part of the program. Pitt County, Health Promotion Council Project, 1999-2000
Pitt County, Health Promotion Council Project, is a student run project to reduce underage alcohol consumption especially binge drinking. The Council trains students as peer educators to implement strategies that aim at reducing alcohol problems. Pitt County, Rose HS Recreational Sports Program, 1999-2000
Pitt County, Rose HS Recreational Sports Program, is a comprehensive after-school activity program for high school students (grades 9-12).
