Instructional Technology Resources At HHP
Instructional Technology is, in short, the use of technology to facilitate and or evaluate learning. This applies to traditional as well as distance learning. East Carolina and HHP provide a wide range of hardware, software and personnel related to instructional technology.
Instructional Technology Consultant (ITC)
Chuck Baldwin has been the Instructional Technology Consultant (ITC) for HHP since 2001. Feel free to contact Chuck if you have any needs or questions related to technology. He can provide assistance with: creating web pages and applications, creating videos and other ancillary materials for courses, technology integration, instructional design, and technology training and guidance for faculty.
Mediasite (available in Belk)
Mediasite is a lecture capture/broadcast system that enables you to capture video from a camera along with multiple audio sources and continuous screenshots from a computer. Your lectures can be streamed live to students and are stored on an ECU maintained server for asynchronous viewing. HHP currently has one Mediasite unit that can be set up in any room in the Belk building. Contact the ITC for scheduling or other questions.
Polycom is an industry standard videoconferencing platform that provides high quality live video/audio calls between two sites. It is much like Skype, but with better audio/video. Common applications are guest speakers, collaborations with classes at other universities, and participating in administrative meetings in distant locations. There must be a Polycom or compatible videoconferencing system at the remote site. HHP has Polycom units in Minges A-18, Belk 1503, and there is a mobile unit in Belk that can be set up anywhere in the building. Contact the ITC for scheduling or other questions.
Laptop Cart (available in Belk)
HHP has thirty Windows laptops that are available for checkout as a mobile computer lab, allowing instructors to provide computer based classroom activities without requiring students to bring a personal laptop. Wireless internet access is available for connectivity and the laptops are loaded with ECU's standard software packages. Contact the ITC for scheduling or other questions.
All of the classrooms in Minges, Ward and Belk are equipped with a network connected computer and digital projector. Each classroom also has a sound system and a DVD/VHS player. The Belk classrooms have document cameras. It is recommended that you inspect the rooms that you will be teaching in prior to each term and ensure that you are comfortable with the technology. Contact the ITC with any questions or for a training session.
