Seniors engaged in Wii bowling

The Recreation and Leisure Studies Department at ECU prides itself on a strong service learning ethic. Most RCLS and RCTX (Recreational Therapy) classes include some level of service learning. This ranges from a requirement for 10 hours of volunteer experience in one course, to planning a programming event for 500 people, to engaging in practicum and internship experiences alongside qualified professionals.

In one class students prepare (from start to final presentation) a comprehensive master plan for a nearby community. This entails data collection, analyzing the findings, writing the report, and presenting the findings to the city or county board of commissioners. Other students assist with Senior Games and Special Olympics held on campus each year.

These are service-based projects -- many students work with faculty directly on research projects, as well. We have had students study the impacts of video games on depression and anxiety, the impacts of parks on physical activity in the surrounding areas, how aromas influence behavior and thoughts, and how leadership development occurs as a result of involvement in campus recreation activities.

Possibilities to match your interests with service learning abound both in Recreational Therapy as well as Recreation and Park Management -- at the undergraduate as well as graduate levels. We welcome your involvement!
