The purpose of the Ralph Steele Visiting Lecture Series is to honor the legacy of Dr. Steele by presenting his innovative philosophy and dynamic ways of implementing recreation. Dr. Steele was a master at educating other areas of study and practice by contributing his ideas and research of the recreation profession. To this end, the lecture series is an annual event that hosts and highlights a lecturer who personifies these ideals.
Dr. Ralph H. Steele (1930—2009) taught at East Carolina University from 1960 to 1990. Dr. Steele is considered the founder of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies (RCLS).
