Information Technology - Smart Classroom
Who do I contact if I need help with classroom technology?

Call the Smart Classrooms and Emerging Technologies (SCET) team helpline at 328-9830. A support technician will automatically be dispatched to your location.
What equipment is included in a smart classroom?

Equipment varies, but generally there is a large-scale display device such as an LCD projector or Plasma monitor available. Often additional equipment such as document cameras, DVD players, and control systems are installed. To find out what kinds of equipment are in a room, consult the
classroom database.
What software is installed on the fixed computers in a smart classroom?

Generally, smart classroom PCs are Dell computers running Windows XP Professional with Office 2003 (Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) installed.  All AntiVirus and security updates are performed automatically. If you need special software installed, please call the SCET team helpline at 328-9830 or email
cooketo@ecu.edu.
What happens to the data if I save it on the hard drives in the smart classroom?

Smart classroom PCs are protected with Deep Freeze software, which restores the PC to a baseline state every time it is rebooted. Therefore, data should be saved to a floppy or other portable storage. It can also be saved to the network if you have an account and location. If you log into the INTRA domain, you should be able to access your PirateDrive network storage.

Do I leave the computer on or off when I am finished?

Leave the computer on. The fixed computers in the smart classrooms perform automatic maintenance functions on a nightly basis.
Can I play DVD's?

Generally, yes. If you have trouble getting a DVD to play, contact the helpline at 328-9830 and someone will work with you.

How do I connect my laptop?

The laptop connections are located in the top-side of the lectern. Locate the standard 15-pin DIN video output connector on the back of your laptop. Attach the video input cable from the lectern to it. If you desire audio to be played back from your laptop, also connect the audio input to the line out connection on your laptop.

Remember to carefully connect and disconnect these cables as they can become easily broken.
What if the specific equipment I need for class is not available in my Classroom?

You can submit requests for classroom upgrades or loaner equipment to
cooketo@ecu.edu. We will make every effort to accomodate special needs.
Is there Internet access or wireless access in my Classroom?

Please visit the wireless Web site at
www.ecu.edu/wireless to see where wireless is available; otherwise, all classroom computers have Internet access.
How do I operate the WolfVision document camera?

To raise the camera - A gentle tug will lift the arm and light into working position, turn the camera head to the desired viewing angle. Place your item(s) on the working surface.

Then from the touch panel, press the Doc Cam button. A popup menu appears. There are two menus for this device. The first contains the power on and off, Zoom control and Light settings (top, box or off). By pressing the "more" button, the second menu appears and allows you to control the focus either manually or automatically. From this menu, you can also adjust the brightness and contrast (Iris) settings. Press the "close" button to close the popup menu.

To lower the camera - Gently pull on the center ring, and it folds back easily into its compact position.

Hint: When objects are too big to be placed on the working surface or need to be shown from the side (like glasses of liquid, etc.), the camera head and the light can be turned to accommodate them.
How do I turn the system ....

On
If the touch panel is blank, touch it to activate the Welcome page. If the Welcome page is displayed, touch to activate the main control page.

Press the EXIT icon. A popup will appear asking if you are sure you want to exit. By selecting yes, the projector(s) will be turned off and the screen(s) will be raised.

How do I lower the screen(s) and turn on the projector(s)?

Selecting any one of the video sources turns on the projector and lowers the screen. Video sources include: laptop or PC, document camera in or on lectern, or the auxiliary video input on lectern.
How do I raise or lower the screen(s)?

When the screen control icon is pressed, a popup menu appears with up, down, and stop. Pressing close makes the popup disappear.
