Search Using the Mini
Google Mini Search Interface
Configuration
KeyMatch
Keymatch/Keywords are lists that are part of the Mini’s configuration that highlight a URL when a particular word or words are searched. For instance, if I configure the Mini that whenever someone searches on “dorm”, you point the user to the area of the ECU site with a title of “Campus Living” and the URL http://www.ecu.edu/studentlife/campusliving/

Initial KeyMatch Values
ITCS has created an initial revision of the keyword list using the configuration files from the main campus web server. This file contains a list of subdirectories and virtual sites that have been requested by various University organizations in the past. Not only is this not an exhaustive list of the keywords that should be included, the keywords that are included may not be what is desired. See the Excel 2007 spreadsheet for the start values.
Related Queries
Related Queries/Alternate Searches are simply additional search terms that can be specified using the Google Mini administrative interface. Unlike Keywords, which would be used when we want to point users to a specific URL, related queries allow for “see also” types of references.
For instance, suppose if someone is looking for the term “meal plan”. The normal indexing process of the Mini would find pages related to meal plan options. However, we might also want to use the broader term “1 Card” as a related search.

Freshness Tuning
The third major configuration option for discussion is the identification of University web “Hot Spots” . The indexing engine in the Mini can be configured to hit specific URLs more or less frequently. For instance, a directory containing archived material from 2000 could be re-indexed once a month, while a page that contains news items might need to be re-indexed several times a day. There are no directories or pages in the Mini that have had their frequency modified.
Configuration File Submissions
KeyMatch
Submissions for KeyMatch Entries are easily generated with your favorite spreadsheet program and exported as a CSV file. Here are the columns in the order in which they appear:
| Term(s) | Match type (one of KeywordMatch, PhraseMatch, ExactMatch) | Title for match | URL for match |
The terms, and URL should be understandable. The "Title for match" is the text that appears in the top of the blue box for the highlighted keyword. The match type is somewhat more complex, and can best be presented by this excerpt from the Google Mini's documentation:
| KeyMatch Type | Criteria (non are case sensitive) | If search query is "Abraham Lincoln" | Reason for KeyMatch |
| KeywordMatch | A word that must appear anywhere in query | KeywordMatches = "Abraham" and "Lincoln" | If your KeywordMatch is "Abraham Lincoln", the search query must include both "Abraham" and "Lincoln" to trigger this KeywordMatch. To get a KeywordMatch for either "Abraham" or "Lincoln," then enter two KeywordMatches: one for "Abraham" and one for "Lincoln." |
| PhraseMatch | A phrase that appears anywhere in query. For the phrase to match, all of the words must be present, the order of the words must be the same with no intervening words, and any hyphens in the query must be matched. | PhraseMatch = "Abraham Lincoln," "President Abraham Lincoln," "Abraham Lincoln president," and "young Abraham Lincoln" | These are all phrase KeyMatches because the words appear in the order entered in the search query, "Abraham Lincoln." "Abraham the Tall Lincoln" is not a PhraseMatch because "the Tall" separates the phrase "Abraham Lincoln." |
| ExactMatch | Phrase must exactly match the query. | ExactMatch = "Abraham Lincoln" | Only "Abraham Lincoln" is an ExactMatch for the query. "President Abraham Lincoln" and "Abraham Lincoln's" are not ExactMatches. |
Related Queries
Submissions for Related Queries should be in a CSV file with two columns. The leftmost column is the user entered search term(s) and the rightmost column is the alternate search that will be displayed.
Freshness Tuning
Submissions for freshness tuning need only be a text file containing URLs. The file should be identified as a frequently updated page or an infrequently updated page.
