The DAIN System (Dial Access Inter-City Network)
The DAIN system is designed to reduce the cost of long distance telephone service to the State of North Carolina and its use is essential. The system is in operation on the East Carolina University Campus and in the Brody Medical Science Complex. It is currently available to most all telephones serviced by the Univerisity Telecommunications Department. If there are any questions regarding availability of this service on your system, contact the Telecommunications Department at 328-2085.
- Long Distance Calls: To place long distance calls anywhere in the continental United States including North Carolina, dial the access digit "9" if calling from main campus, then the area code and the seven digit number. Dial the access digit "7" if calling from west campus.
- Busy Signals: If you get a rapid busy signal, this indicates that all the DAIN system trunks are in use. You may hang up and place your call at a later time, or you may stay on the line and when a DAIN system trunk line becomes available, your call will be dialed automatically.
If you get a regular busy signal indicating that the number you are calling is busy, hang the receiver up immediately to prevent being charged for the attempt call. If you let the telephone ring for more than 30 seconds, you will be billed for the call even though no one answers.
Charges: The number from which the call is placed, time of the call, length of the call, number called and charges will be automatically recorded by the University and billed monthly. It is strongly recommened that a long distance telephone report form be completed at the time the long distance calls are made to verify monthly charges. These forms are available from Central Stores.
WARNING: Completed wrong numbers will be charged.
DAIN Network Charges
- Rates (as of August 5, 1998): All calls placed over the DAIN system are $.11 per minute to any number in the continental United States.
- Conference Calls: Conference calls at the same basic rates with up to six internal and two external parties can be made anywhere in the United States. Conference calls can be prearranged with the State Operator in Raleigh. Dial "9" then dial 1(919) 733-1110.
- Personal Calls/Incoming Collect Calls: The administrative telephone system is for official Univerisity business only. There are no provisions to pay for personal calls. Incoming collect calls or outgoing person-to-person calls are not permitted on the DAIN network.
- Access: Access to the DAIN system may be made or deleted for any campus extensions at no charge by requesting a change in Class of Service (COS). Please submit in writing to Department of Telecommunications Services, Joyner East Room 111. Any problems or questions regarding the DAIN system should be addressed to this department at 328-2085.
