General Information
Student e-mail accounts are automatically created using information from the Registrar's office.
For e-mail problems, contact the IT Help Desk at 252.328.9866 or submit a service request through the IT Help Desk at http://help.ecu.edu.
E-Mail Access
There are several options available that enable students to access e-mail either from on campus, home or mobile device:
New Account Log in
The PirateID, or username, is a student's initials, birth month and birth day. Here is an example:
- Name: Petey T. Pirate
- Birthdate: 03/08/xxxx
- PirateID: ptp0308
- E-mail address: ptp0308@ecu.edu
If the initials and birthdate for a user ID are already in use, then a "d" plus a number are added to the username until it is unique (example: ptp0308d1). To look up a user ID, click on the e-mail icon in the upper right corner of the ECU home page or go to http://www.ecu.edu/cs-ecu/email_phone.cfm.
A new student's initial passphrase is a dollar symbol ($) followed by the student's ECU ID typed with no spaces and a capital "B." Remember that the ECU ID is different from the PirateID. For information on how to look up your own ECU ID, go to http://www.ecu.edu/cs-itcs/ecuid.cfm
New students must change their passphrase during the first log on to ECU's network. For tips on how to create a strong ECU passphrase, please visit http://www.ecu.edu/cs-itcs/itsecurity/passphrase.cfm.
Mailbox Size
Space limitations for an ECU mailbox, including the inbox, deleted and sent folders, is 100MB. However, once a mailbox has reached 90MB, users receive a warning to reduce the size of the mailbox. When the mailbox size reaches 100MB, a user cannot send mail. At 150MB, a user can no longer send or receive mail.
E-mails stored in Outlook personal folders, which are saved on a student's computer, do not count against the mailbox storage limit.
This is your official ECU e-mail account and is the e-mail account professors and the university will use to contact you. It is important to keep well under the size limits to avoid missing important information.
Purge Policy
ECU has an automated e-mail purge policy to delete mail according to the following schedule:
- Inbox 180 days
- Sent Items 180 days
- Deleted Items 7 days
For more information on the ECU E-mail Purge Policy, visit http://www.ecu.edu/cs-itcs/emailpurgepolicy.cfm.
Passphrase Expiration
ECU passphrases expire every 90 days. Automatic notification is e-mailed to users several times prior to expiration and also explains how to change the passphrase before it expires.
Students are also urged to register with the passphrase maintenance site so they can reset the passphrase themselves if it expires. Visit http://pirateid.ecu.edu to sign up.
If the passphrase does expire, and the student has not registered with the passphrase maintenance site, the passphrase will need to be manually reset. For more information on having a password reset by ITCS, please visit http://www.ecu.edu/cs-itcs/passphrase.cfm.
Account Deactivation
At the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, e-mail accounts for students not currently enrolled are deactivated. Deactivated accounts are deleted the following semester.
A student can request that an account be temporarily re-activated for up to two weeks by calling the Help Desk at 252.328.9866.
Alumni E-mail
ECU alumni e-mail is a Web-based service provided by Windows Live Mail. For more information, go to http://www.piratealumni.com/s/722/index.aspx?sid=722&gid=1&pgid=274
