Outlook Live FAQ

Students

How do I GET STARTED with my Outlook Live account?

1. Determine your PirateID and default passphrase by contacting ECU's IT Help Desk, 328-9866/1.800.340.7081.

2. Change your passphrase from the default to something unique by visiting pirateid.ecu.edu .

3. Log in to your account at mymail.ecu.edu.

4. When accessing your account for the first time, follow these security steps:

  • Enter the picture word you see displayed.
  • Enter your passphrase to confirm it.
  • Select and answer a secret question. NOTE: Please try to remember your secret question and answer; you may need this in the future.
  • You may or may not enter an alternative e-mail address, although it is a good idea to do so.
  • Select your country/region, and if necessary, your state and zip code.
5. Click Submit. You may be prompted to choose your language and time zone. Click OK.

I can't log into Outlook Live; what should I try?
Please check the following:

  • Close your browser and then open a new browser session. Log back into mymail.ecu.edu. If you have a Hotmail or other service linked to your Outlook Live account, your browser may still be logged into that account. A new browser session should correct this issue.
If you are still having problems, please contact the ECU IT Help Desk at 252.328.9866 or (toll free) 800.340.7081.

How can I reset my Outlook Live passphrase?
Go to pirateid.ecu.edu to reset your passphrase.

What send/receive limits are applied to e-mail messages? Does my Outlook Live account have a mailbox quota?
Please refer to the table below for message limits, mailbox limits and recipient and sender limits. Visit Microsoft's Message, Mailbox, and Recipient Limits Web page for a comprehensive listing.

MESSAGE LIMITS VALUE
Message size limit The maximum total size of an e-mail message. The total size includes the message header, the message body, and any file attachments. 25 MB
File attachment size limit The maximum allowed size of a single file attachment in an e-mail message. The message may contain many attachments that greatly increase the overall size of the message. However, the attachment size limit only applies to the size of an individual attachment. 18 MB
File attachments limit The maximum number of file attachments allowed in an e-mail message. Even if the total size of all the file attachments doesn't violate the message size limit, there is still a limit on how many attachments are allowed in the message. 125 attachments
Subject length limit The maximum number of text characters allowed in the subject line of an e-mail message. 255 characters
MAILBOX LIMITS VALUE
Mailbox quota The maximum allowable size of a mailbox. 10 GB
Issue a mailbox quota message When a mailbox reaches the size specified by this limit, a warning message is displayed. 9 GB
Prohibit send When a mailbox reaches the size specified by this limit, no e-mail messages can be sent from the mailbox. Any attempt to send messages from a mailbox that has reached this size will generate an error message that explains the limit.

9.668 GB

Prohibit receive When a mailbox reaches the size specified by this limit, no e-mail messages can be successfully delivered to the mailbox. Any messages that are sent to a mailbox that has reached this size are returned to the sender with an error message that explains the limit.
9.668 GB
RECIPIENT LIMITS VALUE
Recipient limit The maximum number of message recipients allowed in the To:, Cc:, and Bcc: fields. A public group is counted as a single recipient. 100 recipients
