IronPort Spam Filter

Cisco's IronPort e-mail spam filter screens and quarantines suspicious messages before they reach your Exchange inbox. IronPort has replaced MailMarshal, ECU's previous spam filter system.

What is spam e-mail?

According to Wikipedia, spam e-mail is usually "unsolicited junk mail sent in bulk." Most often advertising products or services, spam e-mail frequently contains viruses or other malicious code or inappropriate content.

How does IronPort work?

You will receive a daily Message Digest in your inbox listing any quarantined messages.

If you do nothing, the spam messages are deleted after 14 days.

However, in some cases, legitimate communications may be quarantined.  Therefore, IronPort allows you to log in and:

  • Search for specific quarantined e-mails
  • Read a quarantined message
  • Release a quarantined message to your inbox
  • Delete quarantined messages
  • Add an e-mail address to the Safelist so the address is never quarantined
  • Add an e-mail address to the Blocklist so the address is always quarantined
Occasionally, one of your own e-mail messages may be blocked as suspicious spam.

How Do I Log In?

To open the IronPort online quarantine site, visit http://ironport.ecu.edu. Log in using your PirateID and passphrase.

Check the box beside any message and then select an action:

  • Release to your inbox
  • Release and Add to Safelist - messages from this sender always go to your inbox
  • Delete
Remember, do nothing and quarantined messages are automatically deleted after 14 days.
