October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM)* is an annual education campaign about online security.

Week 4 - What is the "treatment plan" if your e-mail account has been hacked or hijacked?

  • Make sure your computer has the latest updates to its operating system and anti-virus/malware software.

  • Communicate to the members of your contact list to delete the spam messages ASAP.

  • Set up at least two new e-mail addresses for separate purposes.

  • Use a different and strong password for each account -- one that is at least eight characters long, and is a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.

  • Going forward, never list your main e-mail address anywhere online -- in forums, in online ads, on blogs or any place where it can be collected by spammers.

  • Don't use public computers to check your e-mail account; there's no way to know if they are infected with malware or spyware.

Remember to stay safe online at home, work and play!
