To get Windows XP:
- Solution: Put in a "Microsoft Products Software Request" in Tech Excel. Or, call the Help Desk at 328-9866 for assistance. Vista is not supported at this time.
To change operating systems:
- Solution 1: Hold down the Option key at startup
- Solution 2: Use the BootCamp control panel on the Windows side
- Solution 3: Use the Startup Preference Pane on the Mac side (Apple menu>System Preferences>Startup Disk)
To set which operating system starts by default:
- Solution 1: In OS X, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the system.
- Solution 2: In Windows XP, click the Boot Camp system tray item and choose the Boot Camp Control panel. Select the startup disk there.
- Note: Holding down the Option key will not change the default startup disk. It just overrides whatever has been set to default.
To run Windows side-by-side with the Mac OS:
To run Windows updates:
- Solution: Log onto ECU's network frequently. Windows is managed by ITCS. You must log into the network with your PirateID/password via an ethernet cord at least once a month. Group policies will update your machine for you.
To Right-click:
- Solution 1: Using a trackpad, place two fingers on the trackpad and click the trackpad button.
- Solution 2: Use any 2-button USB mouse.
To log into Windows using a laptop keyboard:
- Solution 1: Mac laptops have a combined keyboard. Use fn+control+alt.
- Solution 2: Attach an external keyboard. These keyboards should have a control and apple key. Use those in combination with the delete key.
To prevent viruses:
- Solution 1: ITCS will add your computer to the domain and Symantec will automatically be installed to protect your Windows system.
- Solution 2: If your Windows is not on the ECU domain, you need to install Symantec manually. If its an ECU-owned machine you can go to download.ecu.edu or purchase it from most software stores. This is critical. The Mac operating system can be affected depending on how your system has been set up.
To decide which format to use:
- Solution 1: Use FAT32 if you need your Mac side to READ and WRITE to the Windows side. However, the Windows partition can only be 32GB or smaller. This format is best for basic Windows use or for smaller hard drives.
- Solution 2: Use NTFS if you plan to use Windows extensively. However, the Windows side cannot see the Mac side and the Mac can only READ the Windows side. ITCS recommends using your PirateDrive or the built in Shared Folders in VMWare to transfer files between systems. This format is best for larger drives and where the partition is 32GB or higher.
To use iTunes
- Solution: You must authorize iTunes on each operating system as if they were two different machines.
To eject a CD or DVD in BootCamp:
- Solution 1: Press and hold the Eject key on the keyboard until the symbol appears on the screen. However, this only works after you've installed the Boot Camp drivers. You must also be logged in to Windows to use the Eject key.
- Solution 2: Use Windows Explorer. Just select the disc and click Eject.
To delete BootCamp:
- Solution: Start up in OS X, quit all applications and launch /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant. Select "Create or remove a Windows partition" and click "Continue". If Windows is on the same disk, click "Restore". If its on an internal disk, select "Restore to a single Mac OS partition" and click Continue.
To install BootCamp on an external hard drive:
- Solution: Not possible with Windows XP. It requires its own partition on your computer's internal startup disk.
To install drivers:
