This is a quick breakdown of the various extensions you might find when purchasing CDs or DVDs. -R | Can only be written to once | -RW | Can be erased and reused multiple times. | | +RW | Can be erased and reused mulitple times. | +ROM | Can only be read. | DVD+R DL | Dual-layer discs for writing data once. | DVD+Rs and DVD=Rs use different formats much like the two formats that were once available for video tapes: VHS (Victor Home System) or Betamax (Sony). DVD-Rs are more compatible than DVD+Rs because they were first on the scene. The DVD+Rs have a little bit of a technical edge but are newer and therefore, not always compatible with older machines. Read what your machine can burn in its Apple System Profiler (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=153426) before purchasing any DVDs. Most of the time, the DVD-Rs will be compatible. Apple has more information on DVD technology: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24451 Some CD/DVD-RW discs may be incompatible with older computers and audio players. Always check the system you intend to play the CD/DVD on before burning any data.
