New or changed features for Office 2011
Outlook
- Entourage is now Outlook.
- Outlook can import PST files.
- You can "Preview" attachments instead of opening them.
- You can no longer set the color of incoming new mail. That feature has been removed.
- Rules stay within Outlook and not on the server. In other words, Outlook has to be open for any rules to apply.
- Groups are still not synchronized with the server. Any groups you create stay in Outlook and are not viewable at http://piratemail.ecu.edu/
- Increased stability of the database file. Each email message, calendar event and other Outlook items are stored as individual files. This also helps improve Spotlight searches.
- Offline Address Book which enables fast searches in the ECU global address book.
- Notes and Tasks are synched with the server.
- News accounts, Scrapbook and Project Center have been removed.
Excel
- Has Macro support again, using Visual Basic for Applications Engine 6.5
- Can add chart data labels by right-clicking and selecting Add Data Labels which has new options for different kinds of labels for new charts.
Word
- A new table tab in the ribbon gives a new Table styles gallery.
- OfficeArt 2 for new types of word art.
- The introduction to the new Styles Guides which allows you activate color-coded visual aids to reinforce the relationships between Styles and the document content.
- Equation feature has been added to insert popular mathematical equations or by building your own.
- Supports Apple's services, allowing you to send text to any other app that supports Services.
Sharepoint
- Can check in and check out Sharepoint files. Its fully integrated into Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Can open from a URL, letting users access their online files by copying and pasting URLs. Users can also save files online.
- Can save back to sharepoint.
- Has a Share menu where users can quickly access document collaboration features including saving files to Sharepoint, sending online files as links or attachments as email messages.
Powerpoint
- New themes and transitions
- Media files are embedded into your presentation, not linked.
- You can apply a theme to a single slide.
- You can organize your slides into sections.
- The save progress bar has been moved to the status bar so there's less interruption while it autosaves
Media Browser
- Ties in to the iLife applications (photos, music and movies)
Ribbon
- There is now a ribbon where commands and controls that were in the Formatting Palette are now located.
