Viruses on a Mac

General Information
Macs are mostly free of viruses but can still get them, especially macro viruses. The Mac OS is based on UNIX and its permission system which helps prevent the spread of viruses. Generally that means every file and folder on a mac has an owner and a group assigned to it and they have certain "rights" to that file. If a virus doesn't have the rights to that file, then it cannot open or remove it.

Take note that you can pass on viruses to Windows users particularly through email so it is still good practice to have your virus software and definitions up to date.
