PirateID

What is a Pirate ID?

Also called a user ID or user name, the PirateID, along with a passphrase, is used to log on to ECU's network, the e-mail system, OneStop, Blackboard and most other electronic systems at ECU. Whenever you reach a log in screen on your computer, it is asking for your PirateID.

Faculty & Staff

PirateIDs for faculty and staff are automatically generated using data provided by Human Resources. PirateIDs are last name and first initial. For example, employee Pat T. Driver's PirateID is driverp.

When another person has the same first and last name, adding additional letters from the first name continues until a unique PirateID is created.

Once a faculty or staff member leaves ECU, the PirateID is active for 120 days and then inactive for 180 more days. After this period, the account is deleted. A terminated employee's PirateID is deactivated immediately upon notification.

Faculty and staff should update their address book information through Banner Self Service in OneStop.

Students

The Admissions Office/First Year Center sends PirateID account information to new students in two separate mailings. The first contains the new PirateID, and the second mailing contains the default passphrase.

Once the PirateID and the passphrase information are both received, new students should register with the ECU passphrase maintenance system and update the default passphrase to something unique and secure. For best practices on creating a secure passphrase and other tips, visit IT Security's passphrase page.

After changing the default passphrase, students should also choose the security questions that will allow them to reset their passphrase in the event of lock out or expiration. Please call the IT Help Desk (252.328.9866 or 1.800.340.7081) for assistance.

Student PirateIDs are retained as long as the student is enrolled. The first semester a student is not enrolled (fall or spring semesters, not summer), the student's PirateID is deactivated. If the student is not enrolled for two consecutive semesters (fall or spring semesters only), the PirateID is deleted.

Student PirateIDs are last name and first initial plus the two-digit year of enrollment. For example, student James Frederick Pate was accepted to ECU for fall 2010.  Therefore, student James Pate's PirateID is patej10.
