What Tools Do You Need for Podcasting?

There's a multitude of tools and software that you can use to create a podcast. While ITCS isn't necessarily recommending one tool or software program over another, we've tried out several of the products below.

Audio Creation & Editing Software:

Audacity (free) - easy-to-use audio recorder and editor for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

Adobe Audition (~$100; ECU users can purchase from Computer Intelligence Association) - Windows software that offers advanced recording, mixing, and editing features and includes more than 5,000 performance-based, royalty-free music loops.

GarageBand - audio recording and editing software for Macs.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feed Creation Software:

FeedForAll ($39.95) - application for Windows or Mac that takes the difficulty out of creating and publishing RSS feeds.

FeedBurner (free) - online service that creates RSS feeds; also converts the Blogger Atom feed into an RSS 2.0 feed.

Feeder ($29.95) - application for creating, editing and publishing RSS feeds on Mac OS X.

RSS Feed Validator:

Feed Validator (free) - online application that validates your RSS feeds to make it easier to know when you're producing RSS correctly, and to help you fix it when you're not.

'Podcatchers':

Outlook 2007 - Subscribe to RSS feeds quickly and easily through Tools > Account Settings > RSS Feeds > New.

iTunes (free) - download your favorite podcasts, then sync them to your iPod to listen anytime, anyplace; Windows and Mac versions available.

Juice (free; formerly iPodder) - cross-platform podcast receiver
