The university approved the ECU Policy on Social Security Numbers (SSNs) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) effective September 12, 2007.
This policy states that SSN and PII information may only be collected, used, and/or disclosed by ECU and its employees and agents as permitted by applicable law and university policy and only in furtherance of legitimate university business.
In order to implement and ensure compliance with legal requirements governing SSNs and PII, ECU established the Identity Theft Protection Committee (ITPC) to oversee ECU's compliance with this policy in regard to the collection, segregation, disclosure and security of SSNs and PII and the development of related policies.
The ITPC is also responsible for approving the collection and use of SSNs and PII.
For additional information on the SSN and PII policy, please see the links above. If you have questions concerning the requirements of this policy, please contact the ITPC at ITPC@ecu.edu.
