What is Skype?
Skype is a software application that allows users to send instant messages, make voice over Internet (VoIP) audio calls, or initiate videoconferencing calls to other Skype users. Instant messaging, VoIP and videoconferencing calls placed to other users who also have a Skype account are free. Skype also allows you to place audio calls to any landline or mobile telephone number in the world for a small fee. You also have the ability to hold VoIP audio only conference calls with up to 25 people at the same time. For more information visit: http://www.skype.com
Each Skype user has a unique Skype name which can be listed in the Skype directory. Users can add other Skype users, who have granted them permission, to a list of contacts which then enables both users to see when each other are logged on.

What Skype can be used for
Here are some ways in which Skype is currently being used on ECU’s campus:
Office Hours – Instructors can inform their students of their Skype name and log into Skype during their regular office hours. Students who wish to speak with the instructor can place an audio only or videoconferencing call to their instructor without incurring any long distance charges or minute usage.
Student Presentations – Instructors can set times for their students to connect with them during for a presentation or speech. The addition of video enables instructors to see their students’ dress, body language and posture.
Enhanced Phone Calls – Contact your colleagues with more than just a phone call. By using Skype, you can add video to your call.
Conference Calls – You have the ability to hold audio only conference calls with up to 25 participants at a time.
Backup for H.323 – There are many locations in the world that do not have the capability of running the higher end H.323 videoconferencing connections. Skype serves as an effective backup for these situations.
