Install Plugin (first-time users) and Launch an Application - Macintosh


Access VCL applications - Citrix XenApp Client
  1. Navigate to http://vlab.ecu.edu OR choose Option 2 from the VCL connection page.
  2. First-time user? Click to agree to the license agreement to start the Citrix plugin installation.
  3. Click INSTALL to install the Citrix XenApp Web Plugin.
  4. The Opening Citrix online plugin (web).dmg dialog box opens. Choose Save File and click OK. The Citrix Online plugin dialog box opens.
  5. Double-click the Install Citrix Online plugin.pkg and follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Log in using your PirateID.
  7. Launch an application by clicking its icon.

Save Your Files - Macintosh


Files you create using the VCL must be saved to your Piratedrive or computer. You cannot save your work to the VCL computer.

When you are ready to save your work:
  1. Click File >> Save as.
  2. Click on Computer.
  3. Choose a local drive on your computer. Your (C:) drive is available as well as other drives: DVD, flash drive, floppy disk, external hard drive, etc. You cannot save files to the VCL computer!
  4. Click Save.
  5. A pop-up box asks you to choose one of three access permissions:
    • No Access - unable to open or save files between your computer and the VCL.
    • Read Only - Only able to open files on the computer but not save files to the computer.
    • Read & Write - Recommended. Permission to read (open) and write (save) files between your computer and the VCL.
  6. Navigate to the chosen file location.
  7. Click Save.

Open Previously-Saved Files - Macintosh


Follow these steps to open previously-created files.

When you are ready to save your work:
  1. Click File >> Open
  2. Your Piratedrive folder opens by default. Files saved elsewhere? Continue with these instructions.
  3. Click on Computer.
  4. Select the drive where your files are stored:  hard drive (C:), DVD, floppy disk, flash drive, external hard drive, etc.
  5. A pop-up box asks you to choose one of three access permissions:
    • No Access - unable to open or save files between your computer and the VCL.
    • Read Only - Only able to open files on your computer but not save files to your computer.
    • Read & Write - Recommended. Permission to read (open) and write (save) files between your computer and the VCL.
  6. Navigate to the chosen file location.

Access applications from the VCL Citrix XenApp Client (Option 2)
  1. Navigate to http://vlab.ecu.edu or choose Option 2 from the VCL connection page (login required).
  2. First-time user? You are prompted to install the Citrix XenApp Web Plugin.
  3. Select the check box and choose Install.
  4. Save the .exe file and follow the prompts to install the plugin.
  5. Click Run and follow on-screen prompts.
  6. Once the installation is complete, click OK.
    • Internet Explorer - Click on the yellow notification bar at the top of the screen and choose, Run Add-On. Click Run when you see the ActiveX security warning.
    • Firefox/Chrome - Click Continue
  7. Log in with your PirateID.
  8. Open any application by clicking its icon.
    • Firefox users - Use Open with Citrix Connection Manager (default) to open launch.ica
      • If Citrix Connection Manager is not an option, choose Other and then Browse.
        • 32-bit OS: Navigate to C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client\wfica32
        • 64-bit OS: Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\wfica32
    • Chrome users - Click the open launch.ica file at the bottom of the screen.
  9. A security warning box pops up asking for access to files on your computer.
    • Block access - you are unable to access or save any files on your computer.
    • Allow reading only - you are only able to open files on your computer but cannot save files to your computer.
    • Permit all access - Recommended - you are able to open and save files to your computer. 
  10. A Security Warning box pops up asking for access to devices connected to your computer.
    • Block access - does not allow access to any devices connected to your computer (printers, scanners, flash drives).
    • Permit use- Recommended - allows access to devices connected to your computer.
  11. The Citrix client opens, and the application launches.

Save Your Files - Windows


When working within the VCL, be sure to save your work often. Your Piratedrive folder is the default file location for saving the files you create, but you can choose another folder on your computer, if you like.
  1. Your documents must be saved on your local computer. Choose the Save As option.
  2. Click on Computer.
  3. Choose a drive located on your computer to save your work: hard drive (C:), DVD, floppy disk, flash drive or Piratedrive.
  4. Click Save.

Opening Previously-Saved Files


  1. Within the application, click on File >> Open. The default location is your Piratedrive folder. However, follow these instructions to select another location on your computer.
  2. Click on Computer.
  3. Choose the local drive where your file is located:  hard drive (C:), DVD, floppy disk, flash drive.
  4. Navigate to the location of the file.
  5. Click the file to open.

Printing Files (Windows and Mac)


Printing requires access to the local devices on your computer. As long as permission was given to use your local devices (see above), you will be able to print from within the VCL.
  1. From the VCL application, choose File >> Print.
  2. Choose the printer that is attached to your computer. The printer will be named similar to printername (from Computername).
    Printer Name = the name of your printer
    Computer Name = the name of your computer
