Connect to the Virtual Computing Lab - Option 2

General Instructions - Macintosh


To access applications from the VCL Citrix XenApp Client:

  1. Navigate to http://vlab.ecu.edu or choose Option 2 from the VCL connection page (login required): www.ecu.edu/cs-itcs/vcl/connect-vcl/index.cfm.

  2. Log in using your PirateID and passphrase.

  3. The first time you log in, you will be prompted to download and install the Citrix XenApp Web Plugin.

  4. Select the check box and choose Download.

  5. The Opening MacICA_OSX.dmg.zip dialog box opens. Choose Save and click OK.

  6. Next, the Citrix ICA Client dialog box opens. Double-click the red icon to install. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  7. After a successful install, choose the Close button.

  8. Open a program by clicking its icon.

  9. The Opening Launch dialog box opens. Choose Open with Citrix ICA Client (default).

  10. Click Allow on the next dialog box. You should now see your chosen application.

Save Your Work - Macintosh


  1. Your work files must be saved to your local computer. Begin by choosing the Save As option.

  2. Choose My Computer and then then choose C$ on 'Client' (C:) drive.

  3. Choose Save.

  4. The Write access dialog box will appear.

  5. Choose Allow to complete the file save process.

General Instructions - Windows


To access applications from the VCL Citrix XenApp Client:

  1. Navigate to http://vlab.ecu.edu or choose Option 2 from the VCL connection page (login required): www.ecu.edu/cs-itcs/vcl/connect-vcl/index.cfm.

  2. Log in using your PirateID and passphrase.

  3. The Client File Security box will appear. Check Full Access in the top section. Choose the best option for you in the second section, Do you want to be asked again?

  4. The first time you log in, you will be prompted to download and install the Citrix XenApp Web Plugin.

  5. Click the check box and choose Download.

  6. Follow the prompts to install the program.

  7. Once the installation is complete, click Close. You should now see the application interface with icons or folders for all available software.

  8. Notice the toolbar at the top of the screen. Set Preferences, Log Off, Reconnect and Disconnect using these buttons.

  9. Open a program by clicking its icon.

Save Your Work - Windows


  1. Your documents must be saved on your local computer. Choose the Save As option.

  2. Choose My Computer. All drives on your computer will be designated as "Client." Example: Drive C is marked as C$ on 'Client' (C:).

  3. Click the drive letter and then navigate to the appropriate folder.

  4. Choose Save.

Download the Streaming Applications Plugin (Vista)


  1. Turn off User Account Control (UAC)
    Go to Start >> Control Panel >> User Accounts and Family Safety >> User Accounts >> Turn User Account Control On or Off. Uncheck the box that says, Use UAC to help protect your computer. Reboot your computer.

  2. Download the streaming apps zip file from https://vlab.ecu.edu/Citrix/XenApp/clients_common/xenappstreaming.zip to your desktop.

  3. Right-click the zip file and choose Extract All.

  4. Change the location of the files to be extracted to C:\XenAppStreaming. Leave the checked box, Show extracted files when complete. Click Extract.

  5. Double-click the INSTALL.BAT file. Follow the prompts to install the plugin. Reboot your computer after installation.

  6. Turn UAC back on. Re-check the UAC box you unchecked in Step 1.
You should now be able to access streaming applications from your computer.

Download the Streaming Applications Plugin (XP)


  1. Download the zip file. Go to https://vlab.ecu.edu/Citrix/XenApp/clients_common/xenappstreaming.zip and save it to your desktop.

  2. Right-click the xenappstreaming.zip file and select Extract All. The Extraction Wizard will begin. Click Next.

  3. Type C:\XenAppStreaming in the directory text box. Click Next.

  4. From the Extraction Complete dialog box, make sure that Show extracted files is checked. Select Finish.

  5. Double-click the INSTALL.BAT file to begin the installation. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

  6. Reboot your computer after installation.
