Troubleshoot Your Secure Wireless Connection
I am trying to set Buccaneer as the default wireless network on my personal Windows XP laptop. However, I don’t have WPA2 as a network authentication option in the wireless network properties window.
Make sure that Windows XP Service Pack 3 is installed on your laptop. To check this, follow these three steps:
- Right-click on My Computer
- Choose Properties
- On the General tab, look under System. The service pack version should be displayed.
If you do not see Service Pack 3, visit http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ Make sure you are using the Internet Explorer browser.
I have the correct configuration but still cannot connect to Buccaneer.
Some laptops may require driver updates. Visit your wireless card manufacturer’s support Web site to check for driver updates for the wireless card.
Once the hardware drivers for the wireless card are up to date, retry to configure Buccaneer as the default wireless network by following the instructions at ITCS - Learning Center/Wireless/Non-IntraWindows.pdf.
My home network is set up using my network card manufacturer’s software.
If you use your personal laptop both at home and on campus, you will need to choose a wireless network each time you log on.
If security is enabled for your home’s wireless network (and it should be!), click the yellow message box in the lower right of the computer screen to open the list of available networks. Follow these steps to connect at home:
- Click once to highlight your home network in the list
- Click the Connect button
- Enter the Network key.
If you can’t remember the network key, find it at your wireless router’s configuration Web site. If you don’t know your wireless router’s configuration Web site, visit the manufacturer’s support site for the link.
If you do not have security enabled on your home wireless network, just click the yellow message box and choose your network from the list.
I prefer using the Intel PROSet software to manage my wireless connections.
This is not a supported method for connecting to Buccaneer. However, a tutorial for configuring the Intel PROSet wireless client is posted at the ITCS - Learning Center/Wireless/PROSetWireless.pdf.
PLEASE NOTE: The Intel PROSet software client requires you to enter your PirateID/passphrase as part of the configuration. Since PirateID passphrases are changed every 90 days, you will ALWAYS need to change the wireless configuration on your laptop after you change your passphrase BUT BEFORE you shut down the computer. Otherwise, you will be unable to connect to the wireless network.
Why was the Windows wireless configuration client selected as the ITCS-supported method of connecting to Buccaneer?
Because Buccaneer is security-enabled, the PirateID/passphrase you use to log in must be verified, or authenticated. Using the Windows client, a user only logs in once to the laptop and only needs to open a browser to connect to the Internet.
I do not log in to the INTRA domain on my laptop; can it be set up on the INTRA domain so I can log on with my PirateID and passphrase?
Only university-owned computers (including those purchased with grant funds) may be added to the INTRA domain. Laptops purchased with personal money cannot be added to the INTRA domain.
I previously used Intel PROSet to manage my wireless connections. Are the saved wireless connections now lost?
The wireless settings stored in Intel PROSet do not transfer to the Windows wireless client; however, those setting are still available in the Intel client.
I received a balloon message that I am not connecting to Buccaneer.
If you receive any one of the following messages:
- "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network Buccaneer"
- "Click here to process your logon information for the network Buccaneer"
- "Please wait while Windows connects to the ‘buccaneer’ network"
This means that at least one of your changes was not applied successfully to the wireless configuration.
Download the ITCS - Learning Center/Wireless/WindowsHelp-Buccaneer.pdf to correct these problems.
I enabled Intel PROSet software to manage my wireless connections, how do I enable the Windows wireless client?
- Right-click the Intel PROSet client icon in the system tray (lower right of the screen).
- Choose “Use Windows to manage Wi-Fi
- Click “Yes” in the next dialog box
I received a message, "At least one of your changes was not applied successfully to the wireless configuration."
You may see this message when you attempt to connect to other wireless networks. You will still be able to connect to other wireless networks.
How do I change from Windows wireless management client to another wireless management client?
Windows wireless configuration is the supported method of connecting to the new, security-enabled, wireless network, Buccaneer. If you attempt to disable the Windows configuration of your wireless network by clicking the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box, you will receive a message, “At least one of your changes was not applied successfully to the wireless configuration,” and the setting will not apply.
To change to the Intel PROSet wireless management client you will need to right click on the Intel PROSet icon in the System Tray and select Use Intel PROSet/Wireless or Open the Intel PROSet client and click the Enable Intel PROSet/Wireless button.
Note: Windows management of wireless is the supported method of connecting to the new Buccaneer network.
I do not log in with my PirateID/passphrase, should I connect to the security-enabled network, Buccaneer?
If you connect to an ECU workstation, file share, or server resource, such as Piratedrive, using a mapped network drive, you will need to connect to these resources from the security-enabled wireless network, Buccaneer.
