Secure Wireless Network

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the ECU wireless network changing?
ECU is changing the name of its "Taho" wireless network to "Pirates" on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 6:00am (during Fall Break).

Other recent improvements include:

  1. Adding a secure WiFi network named Buccaneer.
  2. Requiring that users on both Main Campus and the Health Sciences Campus log into the networks with their PirateID and passphrase through Cisco Clean Access Agent software (CCA). For more info on CCA, see below.

How will this change to ECU’s wireless network affect me?
That depends on whether you connect to the ECU wireless network using a university-owned laptop or a laptop you purchased yourself.

Will the old Taho wireless network still exist?
Yes, but it is being renamed "Pirates." Macintosh users, WiFi mobile device users, students and those who use their personal laptops on campus can use the Pirates network.

What is meant by “university-owned”?
Your department bought the laptop through state or grant funds and you log in to the INTRA domain.

I have a university-owned Windows laptop.
The Buccaneer wireless network is now the default wireless network for your machine (effective Monday, April 6, 2009).

Will my log in routine change after Buccaneer is implemented?
Main campus users should not notice any change in their login routine.

Users on the Health Sciences campus now log in through the Cisco Clean Access Agent software (CCA).  See below for more details on CCA.

I use my own Windows laptop.
You have the option of connecting to the new, secure Buccaneer wireless network or connecting to the Pirates network.

For instructions on how to set up the Buccaneer wireless network through Windows, visit https://www.ecu.edu/upload/itcs/Non-IntraWindows.pdf.

If you prefer to configure your personal laptop using the Intel PROSet wireless connection instead of Windows wireless network management client, follow the instructions found at https://www.ecu.edu/upload/itcs/PROsetWireless.pdf

PLEASE NOTE:  If you use the Intel PROSet wireless connection client to manage your wireless connections, remember that the stored passphrase in the configuration must be updated every 90 days after your password is updated but before the laptop is shutdown. See the tutorial above for step-by-step instructions.

What is Cisco Clean Access Agent?
Cisco Clean Access Agent (CCA) is software that automatically authenticates (verifies) a PirateID and passphrase and is one of ECU’s best security measures for the wireless network. University-owned laptops should have Cisco Clean Access already installed, and users should not notice any change to the login process.

Effective Monday, April 6, 2009, the Health Sciences campus began authenticating both the Taho (being renamed "Pirates" on October 12, 2009) and Buccaneer wireless networks through CCA just as Main campus does.

Macintosh laptops and mobile devices do not use CCA.

If I log in to the wireless network through the Cisco Clean Access Agent software, how will my log in routine change?
Your login routine will actually be easier by using CCA.

Without CCA, a user first logs in to the INTRA domain dialog box and then again when he/she opens the browser.  Through CCA, a user only logs in once to the INTRA domain.

University-owned Windows laptops are automatically configured with the Cisco Clean Access Agent software.

I use a Macintosh laptop
Effective Monday, April 6, 2009, Mac users now have the option to continue connecting to the Taho (being renamed "Pirates" on October 12, 2009) wireless network or to set their default wireless network to Buccaneer. See the instructions below.

Mac users do not log in through the Cisco Clean Access Agent software.

Tiger X.4:  https://www.ecu.edu/upload/itcs/SecureWireless-TigerX4.pdf

I access the ECU WiFi network through a mobile device.
ECU’s original WiFi network, Taho (being renamed "Pirates" on October 12, 2009), will still be available on both campuses for mobile device users. You will still log in to the wireless network through an Internet browser.
