  • Do I need my One Card to check out?

    Yes. ECU Faculty, Staff and Students must have their One Card to check out materials. Distance Education Students must present their ECU Distance Education card along with a photo ID.
    NC Area Residents, ECU Alumni, Educators and Cooperative Borrowers must present a photo ID along with their library card to check out materials.


  • How many items can I check out at once? How long can I keep my items out?

    ECU Faculty, Staff, Students, ECU Alumni, ECU Distance Education Students, Educators, Cooperative Borrowers, and NC Area Residents can check out as many circulating items as they want. For specific borrowing privilege information, please refer to the "Patrons and Loan Periods" section of our Circulation Lending Policy page.

  • How do I renew my items?

    You can bring your materials to the Circulation Desk, renew your materials by phone at 252-328-6518, or renew online. Items cannot be renewed by phone or online if the borrower has any overdue materials or fines, or if the items have been requested by another patron.

  • Where can I get change?

    At the Circulation Desk, 1st floor.

  • Where can I buy a copy card?

    You can buy a copy card at the cash-to-card machines. The machines are in the alcove to the left of the Reference desk (Reference/Research Room) and also at CopiServ which is located in the Student Success Center (Pirate Tutoring Center and University Writing Center area). The machines only accept one dollar bills to add money onto your ECU One Card or to purchase a print card.

  • Where are your magazines and journals located?

    Current periodicals are adjacent to Reference Services, 1st floor. Microfilm is located in the basement in Government Documents/Microforms area. Bound issues are shelved in the stacks. We also have electronic journals.

  • Where can I find Videos/DVD's?

    Videos are located in the basement in the Compact Shelving area. DVD's are located on the 1st floor in the Student Success Center (Pirate Tutoring Center and University Writing Center Area).

  • Where can I find New Books and the Popular Reading Collection?

    Both New Books and the Popular Reading Collection are located to the left of the Circulation Desk in the Reading Lounge.

  • Where are your bookdrops?

    Patrons can drive up to the bookdrop located in the loop directly outside the library. We have a depository in the wall to the left of the entrance of Joyner Library directly across from the waterwall. There is also a bookdrop near the A. J. Fletcher Music Center.

  • What are your hours over the holidays and breaks?

    Check the hours posted in the display cases outside the entrance to Joyner Library, the Circulation Home Page, online, or call 252-328-4285.

  • Where are lost items returned?

    Library Security Desk, 1st Floor inside the entrance of Joyner Library.


  • How do I reserve a group study room?

    Select study rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis. To reserve a room, please use the online reservation form. Exception: To reserve the Presentation Practice Room 1415 or the Honors Room on the 3rd Floor, please present your ECU One Card at the Library Security Desk, 1st Floor inside the entrance of Joyner Library.

  • How do I obtain a graduate carrel? Faculty Carrel?

    Ask a staff member at the Circulation Desk, 1st Floor.

  • How do I check out materials that instructors have placed on Reserve?

    You must provide your your instructor's name, course ID, and the title of the material you wish to check out. You must have an ECU One Card to check out. Reserve items can be checked out and taken to other areas within the library. Reserve materials do not leave the library unless otherwise allowed by the instructor.

  • What are your late charges for "overdue" items?

    Charges for overdue items are 25 cents a day per item and $1.00 per day for overdue videos/DVD's with a maximum fine of $10.00. Overdue Reserve items will accrue $1.00 per hour with a maximum fine of $50.00. Once an item is returned, late charges can be paid at the Circulation Desk or by phone at 252-328-6518.
