Educator Card School Service

Joyner Library offers two borrowing services for many K-12 educators in the Eastern region of North Carolina.

One is the Educator Card provided by the Teaching Resources Center and Circulation. This borrower card allows educators to check materials out when they visit Joyner Library in person. For more details on this service, visit the Teaching Resources Center Educator Card webpage.

The other service is the Educator Card School service provided by Interlibrary Loan. Details about the Educator Card School service follows.

Educator Card School Service

The Educator Card School service allows public school librarians/media specialists in eligible schools to request materials from Joyner Library's extensive collections to be shipped to the schools for the use by teachers, administrators, and students.

Eligibility

In order to use this service, you must be an educator in a school that is a member of the Walter and Daisy Carson Latham Clinical Schools Network and have a principal and school librarian/media specialist who are willing to participate in the service. If your school is not already participating, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office (jis@ecu.edu or 252-328-5379) or Hazel Walker (walkerh@ecu.edu or 252-328-4994).

Available Materials

To discover what materials Joyner Library owns that might of interest to you, search our Classic Catalog or One Search. Most of the materials in Joyner's collections are available to be loaned to or photocopied for your school's use, with the notable exclusions being circulating equipment (e.g. laptops, e-book readers, iPads, and cameras) and items in Special Collections. If you only need a chapter from a book or some entries from a Reference book, please request us to copy those rather than lending the entire book. If the requested material cannot be provided, you may visit Joyner Library to consult the materials.

Please note: Materials owned in ECU's Laupus Health Sciences Library and Elizabeth City State University's G. R. Little Library may not be provided through this service even though their holdings are included in Joyner Library's catalog.

Making Requests

Requests for materials owned by Joyner Library should be given to your school librarian/media specialist to request on your behalf. They will then enter the requests into the ILLiad request management system. To improve speed and accuracy, the call number and library collection/location must be entered with each request. Please try to combine your requests into weekly batches so we can reduce shipping costs.

ILLiad Usernames and Passwords

Should you forget your ILLiad username or password, call the Interlibrary Loan office at 252-328-6068 or e-mail us at jis@ecu.edu for assistance. Please do not re-register in the ILLiad system. Your username is usually the full email address of the school librarian/media specialist. The ILLiad system has a password hint that you can use to acquire a forgotten password. We recommend you use that prior to contacting the department if possible. If your school has recently hired a new librarian, please let us know so we can update your account information.

Status of Requests & Cancellation

The ILLiad system will send emails informing the school librarian when an item has been shipped to you or if Joyner Library cannot provide an item to you. The school librarian can login to ILLiad at anytime to check on the status of requests; active requests and their statuses are listed on the main screen.

Delivery/Shipping

Article/photocopy requests will be provided to you by email as a link to a PDF file saved on our web server -- usually within a couple of days. If you cannot open PDFs, please let us know so we can discuss faxing or mailing options. Books and media materials will be shipped to your school by NC State Courier or the US Postal Service's Library Mail rate -- usually within a couple of days, but the shipping time can easily take a week.

Please request items appropriately in advance, taking the delay into consideration, so that you will have these materials when you need them. Joyner Library pays the cost for shipping materials to your school; your school is then responsible to pay to return the items to Joyner Library. We suggest that your library retain the shipping materials used for shipment to you to reuse for return shipping to us. If you borrow media items or fragile books, please return them in a box. Please always use adequate packaging -- old newspapers are great for this.

Picking Up & Returning Items in Person

If your school has someone who can come to Joyner occasionally, you may add specific names to your school account to authorize someone to pick up items rather than having the materials shipped to you. If you want materials held at the Circulation desk rather than being shipped to you, please request them using the Place Hold feature in the Classic Catalog rather than through ILLiad. When you are added to your school's account, you can ask for the account number and PIN. Please note that we cannot add K-12 students to your school account. Rather than mailing materials back to Joyner Library, you may of course bring them in person to the Circulation desk or use the exterior drop box.

Due Dates

Materials loaned from Joyner Library will be checked out on your school's Circulation library account. The due date for each item loaned to you will be listed on a label that accompanies each item. Children's and young adult books are usually loaned for two weeks. Other books and media items are usually loaned for three weeks.

Renewals

Renewals are usually allowed on borrowed materials unless someone else has placed a hold on the item. Your school librarian may request a renewal by contacting either the Interlibrary Loan or Circulation departments of Joyner Library.

Overdue Notices and Fines from Joyner Library

The Circulation system will send automatic overdue notices by email to the school librarian. As a courtesy to K-12 schools, we will waive overdue fines within reason, but Joyner Library is required by law to have materials returned or to collect replacement costs with interest. Items not returned within a few weeks of the due date will be invoiced as if lost and your school will be responsible for paying the replacement cost.

Overdue Notices and Fines from Laupus Health Sciences Library

Items borrowed from ECU's Laupus Health Sciences Library will accrue overdue fines that Joyner Library cannot waive. Requests placed for Laupus Library materials through Joyner Library's ILLiad system usually will be cancelled, but your library account does allow you to borrow materials in person from Laupus Library with the understanding that overdue fines will be your responsibility to pay.
