Document Delivery (DocDel) provides full ILL Borrowing services to Distance Education students as well as providing materials housed in Joyner Library to them. A trial on-campus DocDel service is providing copies of articles from Joyner's collections for faculty, graduate students, and staff. Through special arrangements, DocDel also provides materials in Joyner Library to Educator Card Schools.

For more information, please read through the sections below, visit the Help page, or contact the staff.

Faculty, Staff, & Graduate Student Document Delivery

Joyner Library ILL is pleased to offer Document Delivery services to faculty, staff, and graduate students on a trial basis. This service scans articles from Joyner's print and microformat collections (e.g. journal articles, reference book entries, and book chapters) and delivers links to PDF copies by e-mail. The service is free! To make a request, simply login to ILLiad, select the Document Delivery request form, and enter the citation information for the item, including the call number and location. Most requests should usually be filled within two business days. Copyright or staffing limitations might result in some requests being denied or delayed.

Distance Education

  • Eligibility: In order to use this service, you must register on ILLiad as a DE student or DE faculty and be registered with the University as such. Enrollment in a DE class while also taking some classes on-campus does not make you eligible for this service. DE patrons who live within Pitt County are also ineligible for this service.  You can request materials from Joyner Library through the Interlibrary Loan office.

  • Available Materials: Most of the materials in Joyner’s collections are available to be loaned to or photocopied for DE patrons. If your request is for an item that we cannot provide due to the material’s condition or format, or because of library policy, we will attempt to locate a copy at another library through ILL Borrowing; if the material cannot be found elsewhere, your remaining options may be to come to the library to use the material or to speak with the Reference Department to get help locating other materials that may fulfill your need. Requests for materials not owned by Joyner Library, will be converted to ILL Borrowing requests and those rules will apply.

  • Making Requests: Both requests for materials owned by Joyner Library and for those not owned are to be placed through ILLiad. To speed delivery of materials from Joyner to you, please include the collection/location and call number, both of which are available in catalog.

  • Delivery/Shipping: Most article/photocopy requests will be provided to you electronically as a PDF file available on our web server. Books and media materials will be sent to you via FedEx 2-Day Ground service. To receive FedEx materials, you must provide the ILL Department with a physical address; PO Boxes are not accepted by FedEx. You may have materials delivered to your home, place of work, or any secure location. Items sent to you that must be returned will have included in each package a return pre-paid FedEx shipping label. To return an item, simply place it back into the shipping packaging, seal it with tape and staples, place the return shipping label on the outside, and drop it off at your local FedEx location, or call FedEx to schedule a pick-up.

  • Due Date and Fines: Materials loaned from Joyner Library will be checked out on your library account, so you will receive the due date allowed by your patron status (undergraduate, graduate, or faculty/staff) and will be charged overdue fines accordingly. For materials borrowed from other libraries, your patron status does NOT determine the due date; it is set by the lending library and may be anywhere from one week to several months -- check the label on the item, look on ILLiad, or contact the ILL office if you are uncertain of the due date. If returned late, borrowed materials from other libraries do not carry an overdue fine, but repeated overdues may result in your ILL Borrowing rights being suspended.

  • More Information: Questions regarding ILL services to Distance Education patrons may be directed to Suzanne Metcalf at metcalfs@ecu.edu or 252-328-5379. For information about other Joyner Library services to DE students, please consult the Distance Education web page, or contact Angela Whitehurst at whitehursta@ecu.edu at (252) 328-0723 or 1-866-291-5581.

University of North Carolina Cooperative Library Lending Agreement

  • Through this program, all ECU students, faculty, and staff may borrow materials directly from any of the other 15 UNC System libraries, but DE students particularly find it beneficial. You will need to register for this service at each library you wish to use; to do so, you will need to present your current ECU ID or other proof of enrollment (tuition statement/bill, class schedule, etc.); you might have to have the library call Joyner's Circulation Desk (252-328-6518) for authentication. Once registered with the library's circulation department under this program, you may check material out from there as if you were a student there.

  • Borrowed materials are due back to the owning library by that library's due date, either by you physically returning them there or shipping them back to that library at your expense. If you would prefer, you may drop borrowed materials off at the ILL office for us to return them on your behalf with our next shipment to that library; however, when materials are left for Joyner ILL to mail back, please know that it might take a week or so for the owning library to receive the material from us, mainly due to the time it takes to mail materials by library mail.  Most, if not all, owning libraries will charge overdue fees for each day items are overdue; you will be responsible for those fees, including fees for days spent in transit, whether you or ILL returns the items. ILL is not able to pay any overdue fees on your behalf for this service.

  • More information on this service may be found by visiting http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/borrow/unc. Of course, if you do not live near a UNC System library or the library near you does not have what you want, simply request it via ILLiad and we will attempt to supply it to you.

Educator Card School Program

The Educator Card school program allows public school libraries in the Eastern region of North Carolina to obtain materials from Joyner Library to assist their curriculum and staff development needs. Details and eligibility requirements may be found at the Educator Card website.

  • Once enrolled in the program, teachers at these schools can forward desired titles to their school librarian or media specialist, who then makes the request via ILLiad.
  • Materials will be delivered to the school.
  • Materials from various Joyner Library collections may have different due dates. Please pay special attention to the due date and return all items promptly.
  • Special care must be taken when using these materials in class, for any damage or loss will be charged to your school.
  • Materials not owned by Joyner Library may not be requested through this program; these requests should be directed to your school library/media center or local public library.

Please note that the Educator Card school program is different from the Educator Card patron program, which allows individual teachers in the area to come to Joyner Library and borrow materials.
