'60-65

  • The first dean of the School of Music, Earl Beach, established space for a music library in the new A. J. Fletcher Music Center.
  • Dan Vornholt, a retired vocal music professor, became the first music librarian.

  • The library was established as a departmental collection owned by the School of Music.
  • The library's newsletter, Music Library News, began publication.

'71-75

  • During their 1973 site visit, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accreditation team recommended consolidating the music department's collection with that of Joyner Library, and turning over the administration of the collection to Joyner.
  • On July 1, 1974 the Music Library became an official department and branch of Joyner Library.
  • The library collected in the following formats:  tapes, phonodiscs, books, scores, and periodicals.
  • A second staff member, Library Assistant, joined the music librarian.

  • Collection development policy written.
  • Overdue item list posted each week in the hall outside the library.
  • Knogo theft detection system installed.
  • Delivery service between the Music Library & Joyner initiated.

  • Fletcher room 217 annexed for use as a listening room.

  • Completed smart barcoding project in anticipation of online catalog implementation.

    • Volumes:  30,000
    • Volumes circulated:  27,000

  • Technology developments:
    • Network Interface Unit installed.
    • Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) activated.
    • Implementation of online circulation system.
    • First VHS units acquired.
  • Office area renovated.
  • Score approval plans implemented.

    • Collection outgrew facility; began transferring items to off-site storage facility.

    • Began converting LP collection to CDs.
    • Miniature score collection created.
    • First CD ROM music indexes purchased.
    • Music Library renovated (room 217 listening lab relocated to the Music Library).
    • Music Library workstations added to the Joyner LAN.
  • '93-94
    • LS 2000 integrated library system migrated to Marquis (aka Horizon).
    • Knogo security system replaced with a 3M system.
    • New media carrels and multimedia workstations installed in public area.
    • Music Library gopher created.
  • '94-95
    • Music Library gopher converted to the Music Library home page.
    • Statistics:
      • Volumes:  53,000
      • Volumes circulated:  42,000

    • Media borrowing privileges extended to undergraduate patrons.
    • Fire alarm system and fax machine installed.
    • First subscription to a web-based music index purchased.

    • ECU One-Card System installed.
    • New microform reader/printer installed.
  • '98-99
    • Joyner Library building and renovation project completed; all Music Library items stored off-site relocated to the second floor of Joyner.
    • Statistics:
      • Volumes:  61,000 vols
      • Volumes circulated:  42,000
      • Annual gate count:  103,000
    • Formats:  books, scores, sound recordings (LP and 45 rpm records, cassette tapes,  & CDs), videos (VHS, laserdiscs), CD-ROMs, software, online subscriptions, microforms, and periodicals.
