The Rhem/Schwarzmann Prize is awarded annually to East Carolina University sophomores, juniors, or seniors who write research papers using Special Collections material. It was established by Mrs. Ann Schwarzmann to honor William and Emily Rhem and Theodore and Ann Schwarzmann. Prizes of $750, $500 and $250 will be awarded to first-, second-, and third-place winners, respectively.

All submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Papers must make significant use of primary sources held by J.Y. Joyner Library's Special Collections Division.

  • Papers should be not less than 10 pages or 2,500 words in length. Submitted works will be judged on the basis of (a) originality of topic; (b) quality of research; (c) quality of style, including documentation; and (d) overall excellence.
