THE NEED FOR PRIVATE FUNDING
The goal of the Library Development Office is to obtain private funding that will enable J.Y. Joyner Library to continue providing outstanding programs and services that aid in the studies of students, faculty and the citizens of Eastern North Carolina. Currently, state funding provides only for those funds that will be expended through general operating costs.
Therefore, the rising cost of research materials and other resources that East Carolina University students need to become world-class graduates and propel our region forward are underfunded.
This becomes a cost that the library has to bear by raising the necessary finances required to continue growth and expansion. The aid provided by many outstanding donors has enabled Joyner Library to grow into the largest library east of Raleigh, holding significant collections of government documents, microforms, media resources and North Carolina materials.
In addition, it holds an impressive manuscript collection and the university archives, and is known for its extensive special collections and rare materials.
However, the position of Joyner Library today has not come without limitations as it attempts relentlessly to serve the university and the region effectively. The need for private funding to cover the increasing cost of materials and continued expansion that general revenue funds cannot provide for is a prevalent issue that needs constant support.
