Faculty and staff at Joyner Library are dedicated to providing assistance for people with disabilities. It is helpful to make an appointment with us prior to arrival, especially on nights and weekends.
Parking
Handicapped parking permits are available from the ECU Parking and Transportation Services located at 305 East Tenth Street. Business hours are 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Phone (252) 328-6294/6963. There is a parking fee.
Entrance
There is a ramp and automatic door at the main entrance to Joyner Library for wheel chairs. There is no automatic wheelchair access to the Music Library. For assistance entering the Music Library please call 252-328-6250.
Electric Scooter
Joyner Library has an electric scooter available for people with mobility limitations. See the guard at the Security Desk or call (252) 328-4156. A picture ID is required.
Adjustable Tables
Joyner Library has some adjustable tables for patrons in wheel chairs. Ask staff in Circulation for locations.
Retrieving Library Materials
Library staff in the Circulation Department of Joyner Library and the Music Library will pull material from shelves for people who cannot do so. When possible this will be done at point of need. If that is not possible then material will be pulled later and held at a service desk for pick up. Submit a Place Hold request online at; http://www.ecu.edu/cs-lib/PlaceHold.cfm
Electronic Delivery Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery staff will scan book chapters, periodicals, and microformat items into PDF or TIFF file formats for delivery to your desktop computer . If desired, these documents can be printed. This free service is available to ECU students, faculty, staff, alumni, retired faculty and staff, and Friends of Joyner Library. Screen Reader and Text-To-Speech
Joyner Library has JAWS software on a dedicated computer on the first floor next to the Copy Center. JAWS reads aloud what’s on the computer screen and is compatible with Microsoft Office software such as Word and Excel, and other applications including MSN Messenger, WordPerfect, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Internet Explorer, and Firefox. Many electronic journals in library databases also have a text-to-speech feature that reads the article to you.

Joyner Library also has a ZoomText magnifier for enlarging print text, located on the first floor, next to the Copy Center.
DVD and VHS Collection
All DVDs and VHS tapes are ordered with closed captions when available in that format. Selected DVD players in the libraries are programmed to display closed captions. If you require assistance with the closed captioned medium or equipment, ask staff at the Circulation Desk or call 252-328-6518.
Large Print, Braille, and Audio Books
Books and journals in large print, Braille, or audio formats may be borrowed through interlibrary loan. We can obtain material from other academic, public, and special libraries, including the State Library of North Carolina's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Material will be delivered to Joyner Library for use within the library. Some materials may be borrowed for home use. To inquire about Interlibrary Loan services call 252-328-6068. After 5 PM on weekdays and all weekend hours ask staff at the Circulation Desk for assistance or call 252-328-6518.
North Carolina State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
You may also register with the State Library of North Carolina's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped to participate in their delivery services. If you qualify for the service, material and equipment will be mailed to your home. Contact their staff for an application.
