Resources for Faculty Teaching Distance Learners

Joyner Library is dedicated to making sure that the faculty and staff in our distance education programs receive the following library services:

Request a library web page for your course: CURRENT DEPT  Click Here

Access to Resources -- The library provides access to print and electronic resources directly and to materials owned at other libraries through interlibrary loans. Students who live outside of Pitt County may request Joyner Library materials by filling out online Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests. All students, regardless of geographic location, may request items not owned by Joyner Library, through ILL requests. Students may use Joyner Library or other UNC libraries directly. Some students and faculty may find it useful to use other libraries, such as public libraries and community college libraries, located closer to their homes and workplaces. For more information about these methods of access, see "Conducting Library Research from a Distance."

Informational and Research Assistance -- For the full range of informational and research help, if you have a question or need help identifying resources, contact us:

  • Reference Department (tel: 252-328-6677) or electronically via Ask-A-Librarian
  • Specialized reference assistance is available from the Teaching Resources Center and North Carolina Collection, as well as other departments in Joyner Library

Library Instruction -- Faculty can request a library instruction session for any course. Topics generally include a basic introduction to the library's services and resources, including the online catalog and relevant electronic databases. The sessions meet the specific needs of the students and faculty, depending upon the course's research topics and class format. Online classroom instruction can include, but is not limited to, chat sessions, discussion group correspondence, individual e-mail consultations, online tutorials and how-to guides. Contact Distance Education Co-coordinators, Yolanda Hollingsworth, (tel: 252-328-2259 ) or Angela Whitehurst (tel: 252-328-0723) to discuss your needs.

Course Reserves -- Due to the nature of online courses, the library can only provide electronic reserves for online Distance Education courses. To utilize electronic reserves, you must first establish a Blackboard account (by contacting ITCS at 252-328-6866 or Matt Long at 252-328-0152). The files will be displayed on your course in Blackboard, and these materials are only accessible through Blackboard.

Information about electronic reserves is available from the Circulation Department. There is no limit on the number of items you can put on electronic reserve for Distance Education courses, but the library will not put articles on reserve that are already available electronically through an online journal article database.

Please note the following two things: professors are responsible for obtaining and keeping the copyright for all materials placed on reserve; and the Interlibrary Services Department cannot provide reserve readings directly to all students in a class.
