About the Government Documents Collection
History and Holdings Joyner Library's Federal Government Documents Collection has existed since 1951. As of June 2006, the collection numbered 535,202 paper titles, 575,183 pieces of microfiche, 5,296 CD-ROM and DVD-ROM titles, and 106,803 sheet maps. In addition, the department provides access to over 300,000 online government titles through its Government Information Web Directory , sites such as GPO Access , and via records in Joyner Library's Online Catalog . The department selects 82% of the items available through the Federal Depository Library Program . All depository items are available for the free use of the general public, and most print titles, maps, and CD/DVD-ROM materials can be checked out by any user with a valid ECU library card.
The collection includes publications from a wide variety of federal departments and agencies as well as laws, regulations, statistical resources, and Congressional publications, and is mostly organized according to the SuDocs numerical system .The Joyner Library Map Collection contains a large selection of 7.5-minute USGS topographical maps, orthophoto quad maps, Operational Navigation Charts, Jet Navigation Charts, Global Navigation Charts, CIA maps of other countries and regions, nautical charts and other hydrological series, several geological series, the older Army Mapping Service series, and various other small series. Most of the items in the Government Documents Collection, except for microforms, may be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
