GUIDE TO UNITED NATIONS DOCUMENTS IN JOYNER LIBRARY TABLE OF CONTENTS United Nations documents are an important source of information for researchers in political science, economics, sociology, and many other fields. These documents may be overlooked when using the library because most of them are not cataloged. The patron may ask for assistance in the Documents Department. The researcher, however, who expects to make regular use of these publications will want to become familiar with the structure, procedures and functions of the UN, the system of classification used, and the location of the documents in the library. This guide aims to simplify the steps required in locating and using the UN documents collection in Joyner Library. I. TYPES OF UNITED NATIONS DOCUMENTS There are four basic types of UN publications: A. Mimeographed Documents. -
The working papers of the UN; not intended for public use. -
Include draft resolutions, verbatim records of meetings, preliminary reports, etc.; often only issued in mimeographed form. -
Documents all come with a UN document series symbol, e.g., A/AC.105/INF.39 -
Documents are arranged by agency. Certain series within a classification are not by agency, but by type. Thus, A/AC.105/INF.39 is the 39 th document in the Information series (INF) of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (AC.105) of the General Assembly (A). -
A more in-depth explanation of the system may be found in United Nations Document Series Symbols, 1946-1996 (Ref JX 1977 A12 U47 1998). -
Mimeographed Documents that are thought to have lasting value or usefulness are reprinted in final corrected form and are available for sale to the public. Sales Publications are cataloged in Joyner Library the same way as are books. -
Includes some Sales Publications that have never appeared in mimeographed form; these are usually pamphlets issued by the Office of Public Information. -
Identified by a sales number made up of the year of the publication, a Roman numeral indicating the subject category, and an Arabic numeral indicating the order in which the publications in a subject category are issued, (e.g. the sales number of the 1967 edition of the Statistical Yearbook was 68.XVII.1). Most sales numbered publications also have a UN document series symbol. Sales numbers are not used in cataloging a book. C. Official Records (OR). -
The main organs' meeting records, published after they have corrected, edited, and summarized. They consist of: -
General Assembly (GAOR), -
Disarmament Commission (DCOR), -
Economic and Social Council (ESCOR), -
Security Council (SCOR), -
Trusteeship Council (TCOR), and -
Trade and Development Board (TDBOR). -
The UN, primarily through its Secretariat, issues a number of periodicals each year. A complete listing of periodicals from 1950-1962 is found in the annex to the February issue of the United Nations Documents Index for those years. From 1963 through 1978, a complete listing was given at the end of the UNDEX, Series C annual cumulative checklist. II. LOCATION OF UNITED NATIONS DOCUMENTS UN Documents are located in two places in the library. 1. Cataloged United Nations Documents -
The most frequently used UN publications such as the Yearbook of the United Nations and the Statistical Yearbook are cataloged and may be found through the online catalog, the same as for any other book. -
The latest volumes of most reference books are in the Reference Dept. 2. Readex Microfiche Collection (Government Documents & Microforms Dept.) -
The microfiche collection of UN documents starts in 1986 and continued through 1996. It is an abridged collection supplemented by additional documents in the areas of Trade and Development, Human Rights, and Disarmament. It includes the proceedings and Official Records of the General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, and Trusteeship Council (through 1993). -

There are several categories of UN actions the researcher many want to pursue. Here are some of the most frequently requested: A. Statements of policy by member states -
General policy statements are usually printed as agenda item 9-general debate-of the General Assembly and printed in GAOR, Plenary Meetings, each session. -
Indexed in UN-I-QUE: United Nations Info Quest .http://lib-unique.un.org/lib/unique.nsf back to 1946. They are not indexed in UNDI , but are indexed in UNDEX (Series B), and in UNDOCS (Author Index). -
Summaries of speeches given in the general debates are also printed in the January or March issue of the UN Chronicle . Other records of statements may be located through the indexes. -
The United Nations Yearbook summarizes speeches and positions of member states. -
To locate all references to a topic, consult the subject indexes of UNDI, UNDEX , and UNDOC as well as the reference tools mentioned in Section IV, parts B and C. B. Resolutions -
UN Documentation Centre. http://www.un.org/documents/ . Contains the full text of all adopted General Assembly and Security Council resolutions from 1946-present, and all ECOSOC resolutions from 1982 forward. -
Indexed in UNDOC (Subject index), INDEX (Series A), and UNDI (by subject or country). -
At the end of each session, resolutions which were passed are cumulated and printed in Supplements to: GAOR, ESCOR, TCOR, and in Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council. In GAOR, the resolutions are issued in the last numbered supplement for each session. In ESCOR and TCOR, the resolutions are issued in the first supplement for each session. -
Some resolutions are also printed or summarized in the UN Chronicle. -
The United Nations Yearbook has an index of Resolutions and Decisions -
A useful reference tool is United Nations Resolutions series 1, General Assembly, 1946- , and series 2 Security Council, 1946- which are compiled and edited by Dusan Djonovich (Joyner Stacks JX 1977 A3155 D57). C. Voting records -
Unofficial results of votes in the General Assembly and Security Council are published shortly after the vote, in the form of Press Releases: http://www.un.org/News/Press/ . The majority of General Assembly resolutions are adopted without a vote. Security Council resolutions are customarily adopted by a recorded vote. -
UNBISnet (http://unbisnet.un.org/) has voting records for all resolutions adopted by the Security Council (1946-present), and the General Assembly (1983-present). -
UN Chronicle has voting records for the most current issues. -
United Nations Yearbook summarizes major issues and votes on those issues. Votes on the smaller issues may not be included. -
Official results of votes in the General Assembly and Security Council are also published in the Official Records series, as part of the Proceedings . -
UNDEX (Series B) recorded voice votes, 1974-1978. -
Before 1975, the UN did not publish a compilation of votes of member nations. Voting was normally done by a show of hands and roll-call listing was not recorded for every vote. The debate preceding the vote might be the only indication of the way members probably voted. V. STATISTICAL DATA Possibly the most extensive use made of UN documents is for international statistics. A few of the most important statistical sources follow: B. Statistical Yearbook. Ref HA 12.5 U63 (most recent year); back issues from 1956 forward in Joyner Stacks. Statistical data on populations, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, transportation, trade, national income, education, and similar topics. C . Demographic Yearbook. National Accounts Statistics. Ref HC 79 I5 U532x (most recent year): back issues from 1982 on in Joyner Stacks. Detailed estimates of national income and related economic measures.
