Academic Library Services (ALS) is a branch of Academic Affairs and reports through the Provost/Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. ALS serves East Carolina University faculty, students, staff, and visitors by offering library resources and services to support the research, instruction, and service goals of the university. The Cataloging Department within ALS catalogs all new materials for the library's collections and makes them available in the library online catalog. These materials, which include print, media, and electronic forms of information, support the research mission of the university community and the library faculty and staff. Access to the library's resources is vital to every patron of Academic Library Services. The employee should have a solid knowledge of libraries and of a library online catalog; have a solid understanding of personal computers; ability to type using a word processing software package; attention to accuracy, problem solving, and adaptability.

Under the supervision of the faculty department head, this University Library Technician performs primarily copy cataloging, database maintenance, and physical processing for Special Collections, the North Carolina Collection, and other collections as assigned. Materials include books, maps, visual resources, microforms, computer files, and others. The employee may perform some original cataloging with supervisory oversight. The person in this position also assigns descriptive metadata for selected digital projects. Digitized materials are frequently drawn from Special Collections and may include print, images, video, audio, manuscript, or other types of materials. The selected candidate will conduct other short-term cataloging and database maintenance projects as assigned.

Candidates should have a solid knowledge of libraries and of a library online catalog; a solid understanding of personal computers; the ability to type using a word processing software package; and attention to accuracy, problem solving, and adaptability. Experience using word processing and paid work experience in an academic, college, or large public library are preferred. Library cataloging experience is also preferred, as is experience with Special Collections and/or rare books.
