All events except the Saturday luncheon take place in Joyner Library.

Friday
Friday’s events will take place on the second floor of Joyner Library. Dessert and refreshments will be served.

  • Readings by Randall Kenan and Bland Simpson
  • Musical entertainment by Bland Simpson
  • Presentation of the Roberts Award for Literary Inspiration Introductory remarks by Maury York, Professor and Assistant Director of Special Collections, Joyner Library.
  • Presentation by Shelby Strother, President of the Friends of Joyner Library honoring Doris Betts

    The presentation of the Roberts Award for Literary Inspiration is sponsored by the Friends of Joyner Library.

Introductory remarks: Margaret Bauer, Professor of English and Rives Chair of Southern Literature, Editor of North Carolina Literary Review

9:15-10:30 a.m.
  • Panel Discussion: Inspiring Social Awareness for Younger Readers
    Eloise Greenfield and Shelia P. Moses

    These two writers of children’s and young adult literature will discuss how they develop social awareness for young readers. This aim is accomplished through the interaction of fiction, nonfiction, and storytelling in a way that is both accessible and enjoyable.


  • Workshop: Playing with the Facts: Expressing the Message though Genre Choice*
    Jim Grimsley and Randall Kenan

    These two authors, known for their dramatic and nonfiction efforts as well as for their fiction, will talk about how they express social messages through varying genres and where they find inspiration for their writing.


10:30-11:15 a.m.
Morning break and book-signing opportunity. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.


11:15-12:30 p.m.
  • Panel Discussion: Locating Self: Exploring Social Issues through Poetry, Fiction, and Drama*
    Jim Grimsley and Minnie Bruce Pratt

    Continuing with the Homecoming’s theme of Raising Awareness, these two writers will talk about eastern North Carolina as it has influenced their work. Discussion will focus on translating social issues through setting, mood, and character development.


  • Workshop: A Red Clay Rambler has “Lunch at the Piccadilly
    Clyde Edgerton and Bland Simpson

    These author/musicians will discuss with participants how the written word can be transformed into music. Edgerton’s book Lunch at the Piccadilly has inspired a musical of the same name, while Simpson is actively involved in a number of musical groups including The Red Clay Ramblers.


12:30-1:45 p.m.
Lunch break including a reading by Margaret Maron.


2:00-3:15 p.m.
  • Panel Discussion: Whodunit? Environmental Concerns in Mystery Novels
    Margaret Maron and Wanda Canada

    These two mystery writers will work with participants on how to address issues of the environment in their works. Both authors’ works are set in eastern North Carolina and deal with the underlying effects humanity has on the physical world around us.

  • Workshop: To Make Revolution Irresistible: Writing, Poetry, and Social Issues*
    Minnie Bruce Pratt

    The poet will conduct a poetry workshop with attendees. She will not only give insight into her own process as a poet, but will also help participants develop their own craft using examples of their own work.


3:15-4:00 p.m.
Afternoon break and book-signing opportunity. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.


4:00-5:00 p.m.
