- The library was established as a departmental collection owned by the School of Music.

- During their 1973 site visit, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accreditation team recommended consolidation the music department's collection with that of Joyner Library, and turning over the administration of the collection to Joyner.
- On July 1, 1974 the Music Library became an official department and branch of Joyner Library.
- The library collected in the following formats: tapes, phonodiscs, books, scores and periodicals.
