MUSIC EDUCATION AND THE SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENT
Purpose: This bibliography is intended to assist Music Library users in finding periodical articles about music education and the special needs student. The articles have been classified as follows:
Mentally and physically handicapped
Autistic
Blind and visually impaired
Culturally and economically disadvantaged
Deaf and hearing impaired
Emotionally disturbed
Gifted
Learning disabled
Mentally retarded
Articles which discuss more than one of these disabilities are listed under each applicable category. The articles represent not only research in music education, but music therapy literature as well.
Scope: These bibliographies are not meant to be comprehensive. They are limited to periodicals available on the East Carolina University campus. Most of the articles date from after 1980, but a few date back to the mid-1970s. Book reviews have generally been excluded. Articles are listed roughly in reverse chronological order within each category. The citations were located using Music Index (1981 to December 1995), RILM Abstracts (to 1988), and ERIC (1982 to May 1995, searched for autism articles only).

Date: Publication date
Location: Collection in which the periodical is located and the call number assigned to it
We are constantly adding to our collection. Please see the Joyner Library Electronic Resources, International Index to Music Periodicals web sites, and the Pirate Source subject guide listed as "Music - Education/Therapy," as well as the "The Music Index on CD-ROM" shelved at the circulation desk for materials added to the collection after this bibliography was compiled.
