Printing FAQ

Can I print from my own computer?

You can now print to the library printer from your own computer by downloading the Pharos Uniprint client.  You must be connected to the wireless network to print, and you will be charged ten cents per page, the same as if printing from a library computer.  Visit the Joyner Library Systems page for information on downloading and using the Pharos Uniprint client.

What is the charge for printing?

Ten cents per page.

Doesn’t my student computer fee cover printing?

The libraries do not receive support for laser printing from the student computer fee.

How does the system work?

When you invoke the print command, a screen appears to ask your name (this identifies the print job as yours at the printer workstation), for the name of the job (to identify each job you send to the printer) and a password devised by the user (so that no one else can print out your job). Proceed to the printer workstation, click to select the job to print, enter the password again, and receive information about the length and cost of the print job.  If you decide to continue, insert a valid CopiServ or 1 Card into the reader, which releases the job to the printer.

What happens if I change my mind?

You can delete the job, or walk away, in which case the job will be automatically deleted 12 hours after the job was sent to the printer.

What happens if there’s not enough money on my card to print the whole job?

The card will be automatically ejected from the reader.  The system will not print partial jobs.  You have 12 hours from the time the job was sent to the printer to add value to you card, return, and print the job.

What happens if I select the wrong job and inadvertently pay for it?

The password function is the security mechanism that prevents this error.  The user must select the print job and re-enter the password created when the job was sent to the printer.  This way, you are the only one who can print out your job.

Is there any way I can avoid printing costs?

Yes.  You can download the information to a diskette and print it elsewhere, and in some cases, you can e-mail the job to yourself at another location for printing.  Rapid Copy, located in the basement of Joyner Library sells diskettes compatible with the computers in Joyner and Music.

But what if I bring my own paper?

Paper is a portion of, but not the only cost of laser printing.  Costs of toner cartridges and the laser printer itself are significant.  Users are not permitted to add their own paper supplies to the photocopiers or laser printers in the libraries, as alternate paper stocks can damage the machines’ internal mechanisms.

What should I do if I lose money in a debit card vending machine, or an add-value machine, or a card reader?

If you believe you have lost money during one of these electronic transactions, whether you’re using a photocopier or a laser printer, you should proceed immediately with your debit card/1Card to the Rapid Copy location in the basement of Joyner Library or the Rapid Copy location at the Health Sciences Library.  If the Rapid Copy location is not open, call 328-4058 and leave a voice mail message noting the day and time of the loss, the location of the machine at which it was lost, and your name and telephone number.  A Rapid Copy staff member will contact you the next day to discuss your claim.

What should I do if the print quality is illegible?  Is there any way to get my money back?

If there is a mechanical failure of the printer, or the print quality is poor, take you printed pages and your card to the Rapid Copy location in the basement of Joyner Library or the Rapid Copy location at the Health Sciences Library.  They will not refund cash, but they will restore the lost value to your card if your claim is valid.  If the Rapid Copy location is not open, call 328-4058 and leave a voice mail message noting the day and time of the problem, the location of the printer, and your name and telephone number.  A Rapid Copy staff member will contact you the next day to discuss your claim.  We strongly encourage use of the "Print Preview" feature to inspect your job before you pay to print it out.

Will everyone have to pay for printing, or just students?

Everyone, even library faculty and staff, must pay for laser printing done at the public printer stations.  It is important to know that Joyner and Music Libraries are open to the public and are used extensively by members of the local community and researchers from throughout Eastern North Carolina.  These community and state library users have been receiving free printing, and now they too will have to pay for their printing on a per-page basis.
