Running from June 15- August 31, this brief exhibit features a number of recently acquired prints as pertain to Union activities in and around Hatteras and Roanoke Island. Noteworthy is a rendering of a battle near Kinston (1865) from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. Two prints (1865) by Angelo Wiser concern the Burnside Expedition at Hatteras. From Harpers’ Weekly an 1862 depiction of Hawkin Zouaves charge upon rebel batteries on Roanoke Island.. Particularly special is a large woodcut print from 1884 showing Confederate prisoners being led into Fort Huger on Roanoke Island.
Also on display are a couple of late nineteenth century Union regimental histories that include drawings and or photographs of battlefields, landmarks and points of service in eastern North Carolina by the Union army.
Current compilations like A New Bern Album by John B. Green, containing some extraordinarily rare photographic scenes of 1860’s New Bern and the Union occupation there and State Troops and Volunteers: a Photographic Record of North Carolina's Civil War Soldiers by Greg Mast are likewise given attention.
Curator of the exhibit, Fred Harrison expresses the hope that patrons will gain a better appreciation for the variety of options for locating iconographic resources in the North Carolina Collection, not only for the Civil War but other subjects as well.
The exhibit is located in the lobby of the North Carolina Collection. Hours are in conjunction with those maintained by the department. Consult the website at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-lib/ncc/index.cfm for current information.
