Pitt and its Contemporary Surrounding Counties

Pitt County was formed from Beaufort County on Jan. 1, 1761. Its neighbors, Greene and Lenoir counties, were formed from old Dobbs County (no longer extant). On its northwestern edge, Wilson was formed from Edgecombe County. Edgecombe was formed from Bertie County (north of present Martin). Martin County was formed largely from Tyrrell County, now east of Martin. Beaufort was created in 1712 when Pamptecough Precinct was divided. On the south, Craven County was also carved from the older Bath County. See the Pitt County Formation Map for details.

Many of these counties have websites. Visit the NCGenWeb Project to access the many other sites sponsored by this group of volunteers.
