Jerry Raynor Collection,1969-1990 -- Finding Aid Physical Description: One microfilm reel (positive), containing newspaper articles and reviews, primarily in the Daily Reflector (Greenville, North Carolina). Copyright: Literary rights to specific articles are retained by the publisher in accordance with U.S. copyright law. Description: The Jerry Raynor Collection: An Introduction, by Christopher S. Anderson Jerry Raynor (1926-1992) was a writer and editor at the Greenville Daily Reflectorfrom 1968 to 1990. At the time of his retirement he was producing and editing the features section of the paper. A native of Williamston, N.C., Raynor came to the Daily Reflectorafter having served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1968, including a stint in Vietnam. The articles that follow form the collection of his writings that was given to J.Y. Joyner Library at East Carolina University in 1992, in accordance with Raynor’s wishes. This does not represent a comprehensive collection of his output at the Reflector, but only the articles that were left in his estate. The sum of his articles can be viewed on the Daily Reflector microfilm (1968-1990) in the Verona Joyner Langford North Carolina Collection at Joyner Library. Raynor had an extensive range of interests, as evidenced by the subjects he chose to write about. The breadth and variety of his subject matter suggest that he approached his work with the attitude of a poet, viewing life through the poet’s eye and chronicling the people, places and times of Eastern North Carolina for posterity. He saw (and extracted) the same beauty from a rustic, weathered farm house and barn that he witnessed in an architectural masterpiece or plantation house. The photographs that accompany his travel articles exhibit an artist’s sensibility, providing visual complements to the words he uses to describe the personality and flavor of a particular place. It is not unusual to find an article on rare fluted mushrooms on one page of the Daily Reflector and a piercing and perceptive review of the latest exhibit at the Greenville Museum of Art on the next. Such was the scope of his interest and involvement. Raynor recognized with unprejudiced eye the humanity in each person he profiled, whether a banker, actor, migrant or Afghan refugee. His was an entirely inclusive viewpoint. All and sundry received his full attention and zeal. There were no distinctions, or castes, of importance for him; only the immediate experience of person or place and this fact points to a characteristic that emerges when one views his body of work—his egalitarianism. Raynor saw each subject as wholly worthy of his eye and ear, and subsequently his pen; whether artists, farmers, men, women, children, choral concerts or excavations. Oblivious to degree or distinction, he deemed each subject important enough to inform the Daily Reflector readership about it. He transcended the realm that emphasizes our differences—race, color, class, religion—to the sphere where we are all in common. And this sphere was the point of departure for his work. Reading through the articles, one is struck with the impression that there is more beauty and grandeur in the people and places of Eastern North Carolina than is normally acknowledged. One sees in a new way, or perhaps for the first time, the environment that surrounds us. And this is the poet’s vocation, to cause us to see and to understand what is already there. Jerry Raynor has unveiled this beauty and distilled it into the body of his work, and his legacy reflects his love of and esteem for the places and people of Eastern North Carolina. The articles have been arranged into five categories: Art and Artists[including dance, street performing, drama, literature, music, and visual arts]; History, Preservation, Description and Travel; Miscellaneous; Miscellaneous People; and Miscellaneous Reviews. The Miscellaneous categories were necessitated by articles that were inappropriate under the other headings. Also, some editions contained separate Raynor articles that were placed on opposite sides of the same page, thereby making it difficult to arrange them under one heading. In most cases the entire page has been filmed regardless of the size of the article. The viewer might find this helpful in an incidental way, as providing subject and time contexts. The outline below indicates the sequence in which the articles will follow. It is hoped that the viewer will find the articles arranged in a logical and helpful manner, and that the information will be in someway beneficial to those who peruse it. It is further hoped that the arrangement of this compilation will provide the viewer with insight into Jerry Raynor the writer, and cultivate an appreciation for Jerry Raynor the man.
